The Dordt College Defender baseball team earned a 2-1 win over Valley City State on Thursday in Tucson, Arizona in game one of their doubleheader. The Defenders got the win with two runs in the second inning when Jason Wapnick and Andrew Kollbaum had back to back singles and Jon Holwerda followed with a single to load the bases. After Dane Le Platt was retired Bryan Wallman had a sacrifice fly. Jake Thayer then put the ball in play to the right side of the infield and Alex Schoonhoven, running for Andy Kollbaum, scored on the play. Dordt missed the chance to score more when they stranded two runners.<p>Valley City State came back with a run in the fifth inning but left the tying run stranded at third when Kevin Jones was doubled off at first base on a fly out to right field. The Vikings also stranded two runners in the sixth. <p>Cole Samuelson went four innings and got the win while allowing five hits and struck out two with one run given up. Lucas Carls got the save after working three innings and gave up four hits with no walks.<p>Valley City State stranded nine runners to six for the Defenders. Cameron Gingerich was 2-3 at the plate and Holwerda was 2-2 with a base on balls. <p>The win is Dordt's seventh of the season.
