The Dordt College Defender women’s cross country team made it back to back GPAC Championships with a dominating performance at the event held at Seward, Nebraska on Saturday, November 9. Dordt totaled 35 points, easily outdistancing Doane for the team title and the automatic berth at the NAIA National Championship Meet to be held at Lawrence, Kansas in two weeks.
Dordt used a strong pack to win the event by 30 points over Doane. Lauren Opp was the first runner across for the Defenders with a time of 18:18 for second place. Kayla Byl recorded a fourth place time of 18:50 and Abby De Vries was right behind in sixth place with a time of 18:55. Jordyn Visscher and Lillie Koerner completed Dordt’s scoring five with times of 19:11 and 19:14 for 10th and 13th place respectively. Dordt’s sixth and seventh runners were 16th and 19th as Justine Van Zee ran 19:25 and Katie Bonnema 19:42 on the 5,000 meter course.
Mount Marty’s Katie Smelker was the individual champion in 18:12.
