The Dordt College Defender volleyball team lost a five set decision to the no. 15 ranked Viterbo V-Hawks in play at the Bellevue Bruin Labor Day Classic in Bellevue, Nebraska on Friday, August 30.<p>
The Defenders won set one 25-21 after taking control of the set by pulling away to a 14-8 lead and never led by less than three in securing the win.<p>Viterbo established a 22-18 lead in set two and led 24-21 before a kill by Jenna Horstman and an attack error by Viterbo narrowed it to 24-23. A Brooke Wolterstorff ace tied it at 24-24 and Horstman gave the Defenders the lead on a kill. Viterbo tied it at 25-25 but a Horstman kill and a hitting error by the V-Hawks gave Dordt a 2-0 match lead.<p>Set three was evenly played early on with nine ties before the Defenders pulled away from a 13-13 deadlock to lead 16-13 on a Kayla Broekhuis ace serve. Viterbo scored three of the next four points and tied it at 17-17. The teams were equal at 18, 19 and 22. The Defenders trailed 24-22 after a hitting error but Viterbo gave a point back with a hitting error and Meghan Krausman tied it with a kill at 24-24. Back to back kills by Sara Beirmaier allowed Viterbo to pull away and force set four. <p>Viterbo was in charge most of set four and won 25-22 setting up a decisive set number five.<p>In set five the Defenders got down early and were never able to make a serious run at the V-Hawks and lost 15-8.<p>"We faced a tough opponent in Viterbo and came out very strong. We will learn and grow to finish matches," said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson.<p>Dordt was led by Horstman's 17 kills and Lindsey Floen added 14 kills with six blocks. Brooke Wolterstorff had 12 kills with Meghan Krausman and Elizabeth Kiel each knocking down eight. Kayla Gesink assisted on 48 kills and had 14 digs while Kayla Broekhuis had two ace serves and 17 digs. Siri Nelson accounted for half of Dordt's six service aces.
