The Dordt College Blades capped off the home portion of their 2012-2013 season in fine fashion, knocking off SDSU 5-4 after trailing early. With the win the Blades improve to 4-16 while the Jacks drop to 9-5-0-1.<p>
Dordt College fell behind 1-0 when SDSU was credited with a goal after the puck took an awkward bounce off a Dordt player and found its way in behind Blade netminder Riley Braun. The Jacks added to their lead at 14:51 in the second period when Kaleb Juntunen put a shot in to the top right corner to put the Jacks up 2-0. An Eric Huitsing goal with 2:27 left in the second period sent the Blades to the locker room trailing 2-1.<p>
The third period featured a total of six goals and was packed with action from start to finish. Just 53 seconds in to the period Eric Grootenboer knocked in a rebound on the power play to tie the game 2-2. Huitsing tallied his second goal of the night at 16:57 to give the Blades their first lead of the contest. At 11:08 SDSU's Zach Fischer scored on a breakaway to tie the game at 3-3. Back to back goal by Jon Gesink and Nic Enerson at 9:45 and 8:33 gave the Blades a 5-3 lead and had the Dordt faithful on their feet in the Vernon Arena. Tim Rotert cut the Dordt advantage in half with a goal at 5:18. The Jacks pulled goaltender Gil Haugan with 1:21 to play but could not get the game typing goal and the Blades were able to improve to 4-3 on their home ice this season. The win enabled three Dordt seniors, Brandon Fast, Eric Walter and Jon Gesink to end their careers in the Vernon Arena on a high note.<p>
Riley Braun had 31 saves in goal for the Blades while Gil Haugan had 40 saves for the Jacks.<p>
Dordt College was 1-5 on the power play while the Jacks were 0-1.<p>
The Blades will play their final game of the season tomorrow (February 2) evening at 7:00 pm in Brookings, SD against the SDSU Jackrabbits.
