GPAC Tournament (Elimination Game)
A seventh inning homerun broke a 3-3 deadlock and eliminated the Dordt College Defender softball team from the Great Plains Athletic Conference softball tournament in Hastings, Nebraska on Thursday, May 3. <p> Dordt tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with back to back homeruns by Bethany Dykstra and Ashton Beaird. Dordt's other run came in the second when Kim Buyert, running for Megan Huizenga, scored on an error by Midland with two outs in the inning.
<p>Midland's runs came in a three run fifth inning on three hits and an error. The seventh inning homerun came off the bat of Kathy Curtis was the game winner. <p>Dordt did get a runner on in the bottom of the seventh via a walk but couldn't move Ashley Van Kooten around.<p>Dordt was outhit 10-6 with Kacy Oberfoell taking the loss in relief. Brittany Kooiker pitched the first four-plus innings and gave up six hits, three runs--one of them earned, walked one and struck out one. Oberfoell went the final three innings and allowed one run on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.<p>Megan Huizenga was 3-3 at the plate with Dykstra, Oberfoell and Beaird recording the other three hits. <p>Dordt finishes the year with a 20-24 record while Midland advances to play Northwestern in an elimination game tomorrow at noon. Dordt and Midland were part of a four way tie for fifth place in the final GPAC standings at 10-10 in league play.
