Non-conference Match

Dordt College found themselves on the short end of a lopsided GPAC tilt this evening (January 23) falling 91-42 to the third ranked Morningside Mustangs. The Mustangs improve to 19-4 on the season and 11-3 in the Great Plains Athletics Conference while the Defenders fall to 13-11 on the year and 7-7 in conference play.

The Defenders found themselves trailing 13-5 with 12:44 to play in the first half when a timely Danelle Boone three pointer got Dordt within five. The Mustangs answered with a Bobbi McManaman three pointer that was quickly followed by a steal and jumper by Jessica Tietz and Morningside got another three pointer from McManaman on their next possession to balloon the advantage to 13 (21-8) with 11:33 left in the half. Dordt was able to get within eight on two separate occasions and trailed 31-22 with 2:55 to play but the Mustangs rattled off the last ten points of the half to take a 41-22 lead in to the halftime break.

The Defenders continued to trail by 19 at 18:15 in the second half as the two sides exchanged a pair of baskets to start the period but three pointers by Beaudette and Blum coupled with a Leann Osten pushed the Mustang advantage to 53-26. A pair of Jessica Tietz free throws edged the Morningside lead to 30 (62-32) at 13:21 and the Defenders would get no closer.

The Mustangs finished the night shooting 58.3% from three point range, making 14 of 24 from beyond the arc, with Bobbi McManaman leading the way off the bench with five made threes on seven attempts. McManaman finished with a team high 21 points hitting seven of nine from the floor and two of two from the stripe. Jessica Tietz had a baker's dozen on five of eight shooting with three of three from the line. Ashlynn Mulm added 11 hitting five of ten from the field and one of three from the line while also grabbing five rebounds. Leann Osten led all players with 6 steals while Shelby Beaudette had a game high five assists.

Kara Van Dyke's 14 points was tops for the Defenders, as the junior forward hit six of ten from the floor with one made three pointer and one of one from the line. Jessica Jelsema had a game high six rebounds for Dordt College and Brianna Spronk grabbed five boards to go along with three steals.

Dordt College shot 17-52 (32.7%) from the field, making just 4 of 17 (23.5%) from three point range and the Defenders shot only five free throws, making four.

Morningside shot 50.8% from the floor, hitting 33 of their 65 attempts and the Mustangs made 11 of 14 (78.6%) from the charity stripe.

The Defenders struggled taking care of the basketball, committing 31 turnovers on the night while Morningside gave the ball up just 13 times. The Mustangs held a slim 35-34 edge in rebounding. Morningside's bench contributed 57 of their 91 points while the Defender bench added just seven points.

"Morningside was able to just physically manhandle us," noted Dordt's Head Coach Craig Stiemsma. "They made shots all evening and we obviously had way too many turnovers."
