A 38-23 advantage in rebounding helped the Hastings Broncos to a 73-65 victory over the Dordt College Defender women this evening in GPAC action in Hastings, Nebraska. With the loss the Defenders fall to 9-9 on the season and 4-5 in the conference while the Broncos improve to 9-9 overall and 4-4 in the GPAC.<p>
Dordt College picked up an early 6-1 lead with a pair of jumpers by Elise Maresh and a basket by Broekhuis. Seven straight by the Broncos gave the hosts an 8-6 lead and the Broncos had multiple 5 point advantages, including a 21-16 advantage with 8:03 left in the first half. The Defenders answered with a 9-0 run to take a 25-21 lead on a Spronk jumper with 5:37 to go. The Broncos tied the game at 25 and the two sides were knotted again at 28 and 30. Five straight by Hastings pushed the score to 35-30 with 1:38 left and the two teams exchanged baskets before halftime to give the Broncos a 37-32 lead going in to the intermission.<p>
Hastings outscored Dordt 14-7 over the first 6:15 of the second half to take a 51-39 lead with 12:44 to play and the Broncos pushed the gap to 57-43 with just over half to play in the second session. A pair of free throws by Brianna Spronk and a made 3 pointer by Dordt's Kara Van Dyke got the Defenders back within single digits at 57-48 with 9:14 remaining but the Broncos answered with 6 straight to take their biggest lead of the game at 63-48 with 7:37 to go. The Broncos led by as many as 17 and held a 73-57 lead with just under three minutes to go, the Defenders scored the final 8 points of the contest, with Broekhuis hitting a 3 pointer with 11 seconds to go, for the 73-65 final.<p>

The Defenders were led by Elise Maresh who finished the night with team highs in points (19) and rebounds (7). Maresh was 8 of 17 from the floor and 3 of 6 from the charity stripe in 28 minutes of action. Dordt continues to have a balanced attack as three other Defenders scored in double figures. Kayla Broekhuis had 12 points, making 4 of 9 field goal attempts and 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Kara Van Dyke finished with 11 points on 4 of 10 from the floor with one made three pointer and 2 of 2 from the line while Jasmin Schelhaas rounded out the players in double digits with 10 points on 2 of 6 from the floor with both made baskets coming from behind the arc while also knocking in 4 of 7 from the line. Schelhaas also picked up 3 steals and Van Dyke snared 5 boards for the Defenders.<p>
The Broncos Cami Bruckman led all scorers with 21 points on 9 of 18 from the floor with 2 of 6 from three point range and 1-1 from the line. The Broncos also had 3 additional players with 10 or more points as Brittney Wong added 14, Frankie Peterson had a dozen and Chelsey Morten contributed 10. Cami Bruckman and Chelsey Morten enjoyed game high honors in rebounding with each pulling down 8 boards.<p>
Hastings pulled down 38 boards while the Defenders grabbed just 23 but the Defenders picked up additional possessions by forcing the Broncos in to 16 turnovers while only committing 9 of their own.<p>
