The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team came up a possession short in an upset bid of the Morningside Mustangs on Wednesday night in Sioux City. The Defenders fell behind in the second half but scored nine of the last 11 points but couldn't get a game tying shot to go in the closing seconds to fall to the no. 3 ranked Mustangs 64-62.<p>Dordt led early but relinquished the lead to Morningside at the 11-9 mark with 13:55 left in the half. The hosts built the lead to 16-9 before a Dordt timeout slowed the momentum. Back to back Kayla Broekhuis three-point shots got it back to a one point game and the teams were tight the rest of the half with Dordt tying the game at 21-21 on a three-point play by Elise Maresh and the Defenders led briefly at 27-26 with 4:32 left in the half. A pair of Broekhuis free throws with 1:00 left made the difference 31-30 at halftime with Morningside in front.<p>The Mustangs threatened to blow the game open early in the second half with eight of the first ten points scored. The Defenders were down 46-37 with 13:57 left before coming back to within 52-51 with 8:35 left on another Broekhuis three-point basket. <p>Morningside again built the lead to 62-53 at the 4:17 mark and looked like the were going to coast in for the win. The Defenders didn't go quietly, getting a pair of free throws by Danelle Boone to make it a seven point game. A Maresh field goal at the 3:42 mark was good to make it a five point difference. The Mustangs scored their final basket of the game at the 3:19 mark for a 64-57 difference. A layup by Spronk cut it to 64-59 with 2:16 left and a free throw by Maresh on the next possession cut it to 64-60. Spronk converted another two-point field goal with :44 left to make it 64-62. Morningside failed to convert as the shot clock wound down and Dordt took the ball up the floor and called a timeout. With four seconds left the Defenders worked the ball to Broekhuis, who penetrated the lane and had her lay up attempt blocked. Morningside was awarded the ball and inbounded the ball with less than a second left and sealed the win.<p>Dordt was led by Brianna Spronk wtih 16 points and seven rebounds. Kayla Broekhuis chipped in with 13 and Kara Van Dyke added nine. Maresh converted for eight and had a team high four assists. <p>Morningside got 18 points from Ashlynn Muhl with 18 and Bobbi McManaman had 18 as well. Chelsie Trask converted for 13 with three assists and two steals. Muhl led all players with 12 rebounds.<p>Dordt was 20-47 for 42.6 percent from the floor while Morningside was 27-51 for 52.9 percent. Morningside didn't convert a three-point shot in the second half while going 0-5. Morningside held a 31-28 rebounding advantage and both teams struggled with turnovers, committing 25 each.<p>Dordt is now 7-8 overall and 3-4 in the league and will host Briar Cliff on Saturday. Morningside is 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference and will host Midland on Saturday.
