Women's Varsity Basketball vs. Dakota Wesleyan

The Defender women's basketball team fell 95-84 to the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers in a Great Plains Athletic Conference contest in Mitchell, SD this evening (November 28)and move to 4-6 on the season and 1-2 in the conference while Wesleyan improves to 7-2 on the year and 1-1 in the GPAC.<p>
The Dordt women jumped out to a 10-5 lead on a Brianna Spronk layup three minutes in to the contest but Dakota Wesleyan knocked in the next 5 point to tie the game at 10-10 with 15:50 to play in the first half and the team were still knotted with 11:11 remaining at 21-21. The Defenders proceeded to go on a 7 point run to take a 28-21 lead on a Kayla Broekhuis layup with 9:27 to play but the Tigers managed to tie the game again at 33-33 with just over 6 minutes left in the first half. Dordt responded with a 12-2 run to pull ahead by 10 (45-35) with over two minutes left in the first half and still held a 10 point lead at 47-37. The Tigers closed the gap to three, 49-46 by outscoring the Defenders 9-2 during the closing two minutes of action.<p>
Dordt and Dakota Wesleyan found themselves deadlocked for the 10th time of the evening with 11:11 to play at 64-64. An 8-1 run by the Tigers capped by an Amanda Hart 3 ball put Dakota Wesleyan up 72-65 but the Defenders posted the next 4 points to get within 3 at 77-74 on a Danelle Boone layup with 5:41 to play. Over the next 3 minutes the Tigers grew the lead from 3 to 15, outscoring Dordt 13-1, taking a 90-75 lead with 2:41 on the clock and the Defenders would get no closer than 11 in the loss.<p>
Kim Johnson dropped in 30 points for the Tigers on 11-15 shooting from the floor with one three pointer and 7-10 from the charity stripe. Celeste Beck added 23 for Dakota Wesleyan, on 9-10 shooting with a perfect 3 of 3 from beyond the arc and 2 of 2 from the line. Katie Johnson finished with 12 points while Elizabeth Lamb had 10.<p>
Pacing the Defenders was Brianna Spronk who had 23 points on 7 of 15 from floor with 2 of 3 from three point range and 7 of 12 on free throws. Spronk also pulled down a game high 8 boards and Spronk, Van Dyke and Schelhaas each dished out 3 assists. Kayla Broekhuis had 21 point on 7 of 14 with 3 of 9 on threes and 4 of 5 from the line.<p>
Dordt College shot 41.9% on 26 of 62 from the floor and made 10 of 24 (41.7%) of their threes and 22 of 32 (68.8%) from the free throw line.<p>
Dakota Wesleyan had an impressive offensive night making 59% (36-61) of their field goal attempts with 8 of 17 (47.1%) on threes and 15-22 (68.2%) from the stripe.<p>
Dakota Wesleyan held a slim 36-35 rebounding advantage and the Tigers turned the ball over 9 times to Dordt's 10.<p>
