After a sluggish start, the Dordt College Defenders scored a 3-1 match win over Briar Cliff in Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders dropped set one 25-21 but came from behind to win set two 25-22 and set three by that same score. The Defenders then put the match away with a 25-23 win in set four as they had to hold off the Chargers to earn the season sweep in the regular season series.<p>Dordt jumped out to a 4-2 lead in set one but the Chargers took the lead for good with a four point run and held on with Brooke Maguire registering the game winner. Briar Cliff got four kills from Breanna Nogelmeier in the initial set.<p>Set two had the Chargers in front 18-13 but a seven point run by the Defenders got the hosts jump started. During the run the Defenders got two kills each from Danae Geels and Lindsey Floen and three blocks for points on defense. Briar Cliff tied the set at 21-21 and the teams were tied again at 22-22. Floen had a kill for the lead and Jana Van Zanten put in one of her four ace serves for a 24-22 lead. An attack error by the Chargers evened the match at 1-1.<p>Set three was close through out with ten ties up to 21-21. A Lindsey Floen kill unlocked the tie and another service ace by Van Zanten gave the Defenders a two point cushion. Loy Sahr got a solo block to finish the set 25-22.<p>Set four had the Defenders in control much of the contest. Dordt never trailed after it was 10-10 when Meghan Krausman recorded back to back kills for a 12-10 lead. Briar Cliff did tie it at 18-18 on a Kally Iedema kill but Krausman again broke the tie. Down 24-21, Briar Cliff scored two points but an eventual block by Gesink and Sahr sealed it 25-23 for the Defenders.<p>Dordt hit .269 through the match and recorded 16 points on blocks. Geels had 12 kills and Floen 11 while Krausman and Katelyn Schuller each had ten kills from the outside hitter spot. Gesink put up 44 assists and Kayla Broekhuis had a team high 26 digs. Sahr and Floen had six and nine blocks each and Gesink had six as well.<p>Briar Cliff had 11 kills from Monica Boeding and Kally Iedema. Erin Frank had 43 assists and Iedema had a team high 14 digs.<p>Dordt is now 18-4 overall and 8-1 in the conference while Briar Cliff is now 11-12 overall and 3-7 in the league.
