The Dordt College Defenders took a late lead but couldn't hold the Briar Cliff Chargers out of the end zone in the closing moments of their GPAC football game on Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa and fell by a 33-29 margin on September 29.<p>Dordt scored on a 67 yard touchdown run by Trai Pickney to start the sescoring with 1:32 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.<p>Briar Cliff's first points came early in the second quarter when Dordt, pinned deep in its own territory, snapped the football out of the end zone on after lining up for a punt with the ball inside the one yard line. A Briar Cliff return of the ensuing free kick to the Dordt 40 set up a short field for the Chargers and the visitors banged in for a touchdown on the fourth play of the drive, a 35 yard pass from PJ Quiroga to Lavon Wright with 11:16 remaining in the half for a 9-7 lead. <p>Briar Cliff tacked on a field goal as time expired in the half. The drive started when Dordt fumbled at their own five but the defense held the Chargers out of the end zone.
<p>The Dordt defense forced a fumble on Briar Cliff's first possession of the second half and Daniel Fennig culminated the drive with a 10 yard run at the 14:05 mark to put the Defenders up 14-12. Briar Cliff scored the next 14 points with Tyler McGhee caught a 15 yard pass and Kenny Thompson punched the ball in from three yards out at the 13:57 mark of the game for a 26-14 difference.<p>Dordt responded with a Trai Pickney 13 yard run that finished an eight play, 75 yard drive. The Dordt defense forced a punt and took over at its own 19 yard line. Kyle Henricks helped engineer the drive with two fourth down completions to keep the drive alive and rumbled in from two yards out for a 29-26 lead with 2:09 left. It was too much time.<p>Briar Cliff, running the hurry up offense, raced down the field and with ten seconds remaining, got a Quiroga to Harshman touchdown from the five yard line to win it 33-29. It was Harshman's ninth catch of the game.<p>Dordt was outgained 425-396 while gaining 229 yards on the ground. Briar Cliff's Quiroga threw for 295 yards.<p>Pickney ran for 104 yards on nine carries and two scores and Fennig ran for 51 yards on seven totes. Josh Van Kempen rumbled 40 yards on 13 carries. Pickney also caught three passes for 53 yards and David Griess had three catches for 45 yards. <p>Briar Cliff's Robert Wilson ran for 101 yards on 15 carries and Harshman caught nine passes for 93 yards. <p>Seth Vande Voort made ten solo tackles and had six assisted stops and Vanoy Harris had seven solo and five assisted stops. Anthony Hallum made eight solo tackles. Briar Cliff's Josh Block made eight solo tackles and assisted on six.<p>Dordt drops to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the GPAC while Briar Cliff is now 1-4 and 1-3 in the conference. Dordt travels to Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday, October 6 in its next outing.
