Dordt got a timely hit and won a 2-1 decision over the visiting Mayville State Comets on Tuesday afternoon in Sioux Center in game one of their softball doubleheader.
Dordt gave up a run in the first inning with the leadoff batter reaching on a single and she advanced to third on a pair of ground outs. Mayville then took the lead on a wild pitch that allowed the run to score.
That run looked like it was just the beginning for the Comets but the visitors from North Dakota stranded one runner in the second, two in the third and fourth, three in the fifth and three in the seventh.
Meanwhile, Dordt wasn't getting many chances until Ashton Beaird singled in the fourth inning and with two outs Bethany Dykstra clubbed a drive over the leftfield fence for a two-run homerun and a 2-1 lead. Mayville State threatened in the seventh, getting runners on second and third with one out. Kacy Oberfoell came on in relief of Brittany Kooiker, walked the first batter she faced to load the bases, struck out the next batter and coaxed a fielder's choice grounder to the shortstop to clinch the game.
Dordt was outhit6-5 and overcame four errors. Brittany Kooiker got the win, pitching six and third innings and she allowed six hits with one unearned run, a walk and two strikeouts. Oberfoell got the save, recording the final two outs. Beaird was 2-3 at the plate with Kaitlyn Lockhorst, Megan Huizenga and Bethany Dykstra all getting a hit each--Dykstra's the two run shot that eventually won the game.
