The Dordt College Defender softball team was able to stave off a comeback by the Mount Marty Lancers on Wednesday night, April 4 by a 7-6 score to run their winning streak to win their fifth game in a row. The Lancers scored five runs in their final at-bat but didn't tie the game as Dordt capitalized on a five run first inning to propel them to their fifth conference win of the season.<p>
Dordt got their five runs in the first inning on run scoring singles by Ashton Beaird, Megan Huizenga and Paige Fynaardt. Ashley Viet knocked in two with a triple and Kacy Oberfoell, Dordt's starting pitcher, had a cushion to work with. Dordt plated a sixth run with a Shantelle Gritters single in the third to make it 6-0.<p>The two teams traded runs in the sixth with Dordt's coming after Mount Marty scored a run in the top of the inning on three hits but they had a runner caught stealing which prevented an even bigger inning. Viet slugged a homerun in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-1 but the Lancers didn't give up. The first two batters of the top of the seventh were retired but back to back singles gave Mount Marty life. A run scoring single by Gabi Cardenas kept the pressure on and a single by Mercedes Ricke loaded the bases. Kristin Loutsch promptly hit a grand slam to make it 7-6, collecting her third hit of the night. An error put the tying run on first but Oberfoell was able to strike out the next batter to preserve the win.<p>Dordt was outhit 14-10. Megan Huizenga and Ashley Viet both had three hits with Viet coming up a double shy of the cycle. Oberfoell struck out two and walked one while surrendering six earned runs.<p>Mount Marty's Brittany Bruns was saddled with the loss and had two strikeouts and one walk and all of the runs she was charged with were earned. Ricke had four hits for Mount Marty and Loutsch three in the loss.
