The Dordt College Defender softball team won a marathon decision over Morningside in game one of their doubleheader in Sioux City on Monday afternoon, March 26 by a 5-4 decision that took 11 innings to decide.<p>Dordt allowed a run in the second inning but got that run back in the top of the fifth with an Ashley Viet homerun for a 1-1 tie. <p>Dordt had chances to win the game in regulation, leaving two runners stranded in the sixth and they left the bases loaded in the seventh. Dordt also got two runners on base in the eighth inning before finally broking through in the tenth inning with three runs. The Defenders did their damage with Ashley Van Kooten homering with runners at the corners. The inning started with Bethany Dykstra on second by virtue of the tie-breaker rule and Kacy Oberfoell was walked after Dykstra was bunted to second. Van Kooten followed with the homerun for a 4-1 lead. <p>Morningside stormed back with three runs on three hits but they had the potential winning run thrown out at third base with one out in the inning and they next batter was retired on a ground out to third to end the frame with two runners on base.<p>Dordt got the winning run across Ashton Beaird doubling in Sidney Larsen with one out in the eleventh for a 5-4 lead. <p>Morningside threatened against Kacy Oberfoell, getting runners at first and third with no one out but two fly ball outs and a line out ended the threat and gave Dordt the win.<p>Oberfoell was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts against four walks. She was charged with two earned runs in the complete game. Morningside's Jordan Johnson took the loss with seven strikeouts and four walks. Dordt outhit the Mustangs 12-10.<p>Kaitlin Lockhorst had three doubles in six at-bats while Beaird, Megan Huizenga, Ashley Viet and Ashley Van Kooten all had two hits each. For Viet and Van Kooten their homeruns were the first of the year for both players.<p>The game was the first of the GPAC season for Morningside while Dordt improved to 1-2 after a pair of losses on Saturday to Concordia.
