Dordt College lost a ten-inning, non-conference 6-5 decision to Peru State in Peru, Nebraska on Wednesday, April 11. The game was scheduled to go nine innings.<p>
Dordt got on the board in the first when Nathan Fraley walked and advanced to third on two wild pitches. Fraley scored on a Dustin Brisel single and the Defenders eventually loaded the bases but got no more than the single run.<p>Peru State countered with two runs in the bottom of the second off of Dordt starter Ryan Baas on four hits and and error. Dordt eventually tied it with a manufactured run in the fourth with Eric Anderson walking to lead off the inning and he stole second base. An Eric Torgerson bunt was misplayed with runners on first and second and loaded the bases. Anderson tried to score on a wild pitch but was tagged out and after another walk, this one to Sam De Nooy to load the bases, the Defenders scored on a Nathan Fraley walk. Dordt missed out on a big inning with the bases loeaded when the third out was recorded.<p>The Defenders took a 3-2 lead in the fifth when Travis Dekkers singled and Brisel doubled him in. Brisel was eventually retired when he tried to score on a fly ball by Mark Lyzenga to right field. Dordt tacked on another single run in the sixth with a Fraley single scoring Aaron Parks from second with two outs. <p>Down 4-2 the hosts scored three runs in the seventh courtesy of two hit batsmen, three walks and a bunt single. The 5-4 deficit for Dordt held until the top of the ninth when Fraley walked for the third time and advanced to second on a Nick Serrato sacrifice bunt and a Travis Dekkers grounder. Brisel delivered a single to tie the game and the game went to extra innings after Mark Nyhoff retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth. <p>The tenth started with a Mark Lyzenga single but a double play knocked the Defender rally down and Peru State won it with a one-out single that made the final 6-5.<p>Mark Nyhoff took the loss for the Defenders after pitching the final two and a third innings and allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Brad Trimm pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Jeremy Engbers and Josh Van Kekerix each had a single no-hit relief inning.<p>Dordt was out hit 9-6 with Dustin Brisel going 3-5 with three runs batted in on a double and two singles. Fraley scored twice and had two runs batted in and walked three times. <p>Peru State's Derek Voigt got the win with two innings of relief and allowed a run on two hits. Peru State issued 12 walks to Dordt batters.<p>Dordt is 10-20 and returns to conference play on Friday hosting Nebraska Wesleyan and is scheduled to host Concordia on Saturday.
