Dordt College scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back in winning their third decision in four tries against the North Central (Minnesota) Rams on Saturday, March 24 in Sioux Center. The win forced a split of the doubleheader played at Open Space Park.
Dordt got three in the first inning on four hits with Fraley scoring on a passed ball and Dustin Brisel and Zach Staudt knocked in a run each with a sacrifice fly and double respectively.
North Central left the bases loaded in the top of the second and the Defenders rode that momentum to two more runs in the second inning. Travis Dekkers knocked in two runs with a double in the inning. North Central broke up the shutout with a run in the third but Dordt countered with a run in the fourth as Brisel knocked in a run with a single. The Defenders put the game out of reach with five in the bottom of the sixth on just one hit and four walks. Mark Lyzenga struck for a double to score two runs in that frame.
Aaron Parks was the winner with six innings of work while allowing eight hits and one run with five bases on balls and five strikeouts. Jeremy Engbers pitched a scoreless seventh while giving up a hit, a walk and he struck out one.
Eric Anderson was 3-3 with four runs scored and walked once. Seven other players reached with hits for the Defenders as they outhit the Rams 10-9. Brisel had three runs batted in and Dekkers two along with Lyzenga. Nathan Fraley scored twice.
Dordt is now 8-9 and will host Mayville State on Tuesday, March 27. North Central slips to 3-14.
