In a game where the two teams combined for 23 hits, the North Central (Minnesota) Rams took an 8-4 decision over Dordt College in non-conference baseball Saturday, March 24 in Sioux Center. The game was the first of a doubleheader played between the two in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Dordt took an early 2-1 lead after Travis Dekkers doubled in Nathan Fraley and Dekkers eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Defenders pushed the lead to 3-1 with Fraley doubling in Aaron Parks in the second inning but the visitors tied it with two runs off Dordt starter Brad Trimm in the third inning.
The Defenders pushed a fourth run across in the fourth with Josh Peterson getting a single that scored Anthony Maule who was running for Eric Torgerson. Dordt led 4-3 at that point.
North Central took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth and then scored three in the top of the seventh get up 8-4. Dordt had its chances in the seventh when Fraley and Nick Serrato each singled but a flyout and double play ended the inning, snapping a four game winning streak for the Defenders.
Dordt's John Drenten took the loss in relief after pitching two innings and allwoing two runs on two hits. Brad Trimm started the game and went three innigns while giving up three runs and five hits. Ryan Baas and Josh Van Kekerix each pitched an inning of relief. Matt Huberty was the winning pitcher for North Central, going the distance and allowing four runs on ten hits.
Fraley had three hits and a run scored with a double and two singles. Serrato was 2-4 and five other Defenders had base hits to account for Dordt's ten hits.
