Dordt's Zach Staudt delivered a game tying hit in the sixth inning and a game winning hit in the eighth inning to trigger a 4-3 win for the Defenders in game two of their doubleheader with North Central (Minnesota) on Friday night in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders got two runs on three hits in the third inning while capitalizing on two North Central errors. Nathan Fraley knocked in a run with a single and Nick Serrato delivered a sacrifice fly in the inning for a 2-0 lead. The Rams got one run back with a pair of hits in the fourth inning and took the lead with two runs on two hits in the sixth inning for a 3-2 lead. Down a run, the Defenders got a one out double from Dustin Brisel and he advanced to third on a groundout to shortstop. With two down, Staudt singled up the middle to tie the game and after a scoreless seventh the teams went to extra innings.
Ben Van Kekerix gave way to Mark Nyhoff after six innings on the mound. Nyhoff struck out three of the four batters he faced in the seventh. In the eighth North Central's lead off batter singled but was thrown out by Eric Torgerson trying to steal second and the next two batters were retired without incident.
Nick Serrato led off Dordt's half of the eighth and he singled, advancing to second on an errant throw to first after the cutoff. Travis Dekkers was walked and Brisle sacrificed the runners up a base. Another intentional walk to Aaron Parks loaded the bases and with a fifth infielder in the game, Staudt drove a single to rightfield for the game winning hit.
Dordt outhit the visitors 8-6 with Brisel and Staudt each registering two hits and Staudt had two runs batted in.
Van Kekerix went six innings and allowed five hits with seven strikeouts and walked none. Nyhoff got the win working two innings of relief and struck out four and allowed one hit.
Dordt is now 7-8 while North Central is 2-13. The two teams will play again on Saturday starting at noon.
