The Dordt College Defender women's basketball team, playing in their first game after the Christmas break, posted a 55-52 victory over Missouri Baptist in their opening game of the Northwestern Classic this afternoon, to improve to 5-8 on the season.

A jumper by Dordt's Elise Maresh gave Dordt a 4-2 lead with 17:22 to play in the first half and the Defenders quickly pushed their advantage to double digits, taking a 10 point lead (14-4) on a Bailey Spencer layup with 13:20 to go. Halfway through the first half the Defenders would take their biggest lead of the game at 16, leading 21-5 with 10:04 to go on a Danelle Boone free throw. Missouri Baptist outscored Dordt 14-6 over the final 10 minutes of the first half and the Defenders took an 8 point lead (27-19) in to the break.

The Spartans tallied the first 6 points of the second half and got within 2 points at 27-25 on an Andrea Seabaugh jumper with 17:23 to play. Dordt responded by outscoring Missouri Baptist 13-7 over the next 6 minutes to regain the 8 point half-time cushion, leading 40-32 with 11:26 to play in the second half. With 9:01 to play in the half Dordt again enjoyed a 10 point advantage, leading the Spartans 44-34 on a Danelle Boone layup. A 3 pointer by Dordt freshman Kayla Gesink with 5:21 to play gave the Defenders their biggest lead of the half at 13 (49-36).

The Defenders still held a 10 point advantage at 51-41 with 4:39 to play but the Spartans made a game of it down the stretch, knocking in the next 8 points to cut the Dordt lead down to s single point (51-50) on a Janelle Hensold jumper with a minute and 37 seconds to play. A Brianna Spronk free throw at 1:26 gave Dordt a 2 point lead (52-50) but a layup by Missouri Baptist's Chelsea Prosser tied the game at 52 all with 68 seconds to play. Dordt was unable to convert on their next possession giving the Spartans the chance to take the lead after having not led since taking a 2-0 lead in the first minute of play.
Missouri Baptist's Lauren Taylor missed a jumper with 33 seconds to play and Brianna Spronk ripped down the rebound for Dordt College giving the Defenders the chance for a basket late in the shot clock, leaving little time for the Spartans to score. With 10 seconds left in the contest the Defenders called timeout to set up a game winning shot. With the shot clock winding down, Kayla Gesink penetrated, drew in the Spartan defense, and found Danelle Boone open in the right corner. Boone launched a three pointer that found the back of the net, giving Dordt a 55-52 lead with under 5 seconds left.
With the ball at mid-court and 2.8 seconds remaining, the Spartans called time out. With a foul to give, Dordt committed a foul on the ensuing in bounds play and the Spartans than called back to back timeouts. When action resumed, Danelle Boone again came up with the big play, as she stole the in bounds pass to secure the Dordt victory.

"We did everything right on that final possession," said Dordt Head Coach Craig Stiemsma, "and we are certainly happy to come away with the win. It was really nice to have the luxury of a foul to give on that final offensive sequence. We knew that even if we missed we could still crash the offensive boards hard without sending them to the free throw line. This game showed how much potential exists on this team but we need to do a better job of executing and getting the balls into the hands of people that can score. We couldn't build on that lead because of all the turnovers. I felt like we really worked hard, especially on the defensive end of the floor and our guards did a nice job defending their key players."

The Defenders were led in scoring by Kara Van Dyke and Brianna Spronk who both finished with 10 points. Spronk also pulled down a team high 9 boards while Van Dyke grabbed 8. Kayla Gesink, Kayla Adamson and Brianna Spronk each dished out 2 assists and Elise Maresh had a team high 3 steals.

Missouri Baptist's Andrea Seabaugh posted a game high 15 points and 7 steals while Janelle Hensold had 11 points. Chelsea Prosser matched Spronk's 9 rebounds with Sara Woodegeard securing 7 caroms. Lauren Taylor had 3 assists for the Spartans and Mandy Kirby added 4 steals.

Both teams had turnover issues with the Spartans giving up the ball 21 times while forcing the Defenders in 28 turnovers of their own. Dordt won the rebounding battle, grabbing 39 boards, including 11 offensive, while Missouri Baptist pulled down 30.

Both teams converted 22 field goals, with Dordt shooting 22 of 52 from the floor for 42.3%, including just 2 of 10 from behind the arc for 20%. Missouri Baptist was 22 of 57 for in field goal attempts for 38.6% with 5 of 13 in three pointers for 38.5%. Neither team was strong from the charity stripe as the Defenders were 9 of 17 (52.9%) while the Spartans were worse yet making only 3 of 10 for 30%.

In the other game played today in the Northwestern Classic the Red Raiders defeated Viterbo 88-65.
