It took some time but the Dordt Defenders broke through with two late goals in a 2-0 win over Mount Mercy (Iowa) in a non-conference contest in Sioux Center on Saturday, August 27.<p>
Dordt outshot the Mustangs 4-2 in the first half but had nothing to show for it as the match remained scoreless.<p>The Defenders broke through with a goal in the 79th minute when Phil Nywening scored off a pass from Scott Van Wylen that he put in the bottom right corner. The Defenders wasted little time in getting insurance when Tom Stepanek fed a streaking Derick Sackey for a goal in the 84th minute. The freshman from Arlington, Texas took the ball up the sideline and got past Mount Mercy's goalkeeper for the insurance and Dordt held on for the 2-0 victory.<p>Dordt outshot the Cedar Rapids, Iowa school 18-8 and put nine shots on goal. Brian Verwolf got the win in goal with three saves.<p>Dordt is 1-0 and will face Trinity International (Illinois) on Friday, September 2. Mount Mercy falls to 0-2 after dropping an overtime contest on Friday.
