Dordt Baseball On Road For Doubleheaders

GAMETIME… Dordt will travel to Hastings, Nebraska and Crete, Nebraska for a pair of doubleheaders as they open GPAC play on Friday and Saturday, March 28 and 29. The Defenders will face the Hastings Broncos starting at 4:30 on Friday and play the Doane Tigers on Saturday starting at 1:00.

SCOUTING REPORT… Hastings is playing in its GPAC opener after starting the season 6-12 in non-conference play. The Broncos are 1-4 in their last five contests. The win for Hastings in that string is a 5-4 win over Mayville State while the losses are to Valley City State (twice), Mayville State and York. The Broncos own a doubleheader sweep over Dickinson State and a win over both Friends (Kansas) and Grace (Nebraska).
The Broncos are batting .272 as a team and have been outscored 137-90 this season. Teams have 217 hits against Hastings while the Broncos have 147 hits as a team. Trenton Neill has a team high 23 hits with a .324 batting average to go with four doubles and four homeruns and 13 runs batted in. Jake Steese alo has 13 runs batted in with five doubles and 16 hits. Mitchell Marquardt is batting .292 with 19 hits and five doubles and 11 runs batted in.
Hastings’s pitching staff has a 7.73 earned run average. AJ Fruchtl has earned the decision in three of the Broncos’ wins and is 3-1 with a 3.60 earned run average in 20 innings pitched. Tyler Stender is 1-3 with a 8.10 earned run average in 20 innings and Eric Antilla is 0-2 with an 8.57 earned run average. Fruchtl is the team leader in strikeouts with 21 and has issued 10 walks.
Doane is playing its conference openers this weekend and will meet Northwestern on Friday afternoon before hosting Dordt on Saturday. Doane is off to a 17-7 start and had an eight game winning streak from March 9 to March 17. Mayville State stopped the streak with a 2-0 win on March 17. Doane recently lost three in a row to Grace (Nebraska), Dickinson State (North Dakota) and Bethesda (California) before getting a win over Valley City State on March 21 to stop that run.
Doane has outscored teams 162-87 this season and have outhit teams 232-180. The Tigers are batting .320 and are led by Kevin Clausen’s 33 hits and .393 batting average with two homeruns and 24 homeruns. Nick Studer hits for a .356 batting average and has 18 runs batted in. In all, Doane has six of their regulars batting .312 or batter. Alex Arkfield has knocked in 20 runs and has five doubles.
Doane’s team earned run average is 2.90 with Elliott Engle leading the way with a 0.72 earned run average wth 24 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched and he is 4-1. Brandon Stennis is 3-1 with a 3.07 earned run average and Austin Casepersen is 4-1. Stennis has struck out 33 batters in 29 innings and Nathan Roth is 2-2 with a 2.49 earned run average and 28 strikeouts.
DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 7-7 this season and is looking to stop a four game losing skid. All of the Defenders’ losses in that run are by one run each. Dordt started the season with a 6-0 mark. Dordt’s last win was a 3-2 win over Valley City State to start that doubleheader.
Dordt is batting .308 this season and has outscored teams 101-77. Dordt has 127 hits as a team and have worked for 79 walks to 52 for opponents. Cameron Gingerich is batting .400 this season with a team high 20 hits and has knocked in nine runs. Andy Kollbaum is batting .390 and has 16 hits and nine runs batted in while Jake Thayer is batting .371 and Bryan Wallman .333. Jason Wapnick has knocked in a team high 16 runs and has 14 hits. Nathan Fraley has eight stolen bases while Gingerich and Aaron Parks each have five swipes.
Dordt has a team earned run average of 4.91 and teams are batting .276 against the Defenders. Ben Van Kekerix, John Drenten and Michael Grady have all appeared in four games. Van Kekerix is 2-2 in four starts with a 5.40 earned run average in 23 1/3 innings and has struck out 23 batters. Five other Defenders all have one win each. Aaron Parks has 19 strikeouts against three walks in 9 1/3 innings and Josh Van Kekerix has 14 strikeouts in 14 innings.
THE SERIES…Dordt is 6-18 against Hastings. Last season Dordt won a 3-2 decision in a game that featured just eight hits—four by each team. Lucas Carls got the complete game win and struck out five. Hastings forced a split with a 5-3 win in the other game after Dordt had scored three in the first. Hastings responded with two in the fifth and three in the sixth. Dordt outhit the Broncos in the loss 5-3. Ben Van Kekerix took the loss while allowing three hits and walked four.
Dordt trails the series with the Tigers 16-6. Doane swept the doubleheader by scores of 2-1 and 2-0. In the 2-1 game Mark Nyhoff took the loss while allowing six hits and striking out four. The 2-0 win was a no-hitter by Alex Caspersen as he struck out seven and walked three. Jake Slings took the loss while scattering five hits and struck out tw and walked no one.
LAST TIME… York beat Hastings on March 25 by a final score of 9-3 in a nine inning contest. York outhit the Broncos 12-7 and Hastings committed four errors that led to five unearned runs. Trenton Neill had two of Hastings’s hits in the loss and scored a run with a run batted in.
Doane held off Valley City State 8-4 on March 21 as the Vikings plated three runs in the top of the ninth to cut into what was an 8-1 advantage. Doane scored three in the first and three in the second. Matt Cuellar, who has played in 13 games this season, had a team high three hits and Jackson Mancieri pitched five innings for his first win of the season and allowed three hits and no runs.

NEXT UP… Hastings is scheduled to face Northwestern on Saturday, March 29 and will travel to face Morningside on Saturday, April 5.
Doane will host the University of Winnipeg on March 31 before playing at Baker on Wednesday, April 2. Doane resumes conference play on April 5 and 6 against Mount Marty and Morningside.
Dordt is scheduled to host Presentation on Wednesday, April 2 before hosting a pair of doubleheaders in GPAC play against Nebraska Wesleyan and Concordia on Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5.
