Spring Break Baseball In Arizona

GAMETIME… The Dordt Defender baseball team will play eight games in Tucson, Arizona from Monday, March 10 through Friday, March 14. The Defenders will play Presentation on Monday at 10:00 a.m. and will face Dakota State at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday the Defenders have a doubleheader with Jamestown scheduled starting at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday the Defenders have a single game with Concordia-St. Paul starting at 2:00 p.m. Valley City State is on the schedule for a doubleheader on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. Friday the Defenders conclude the trip with a single game against Central at 11:00 a.m.

SCOUTING REPORT… Presentation is 0-12 so far this season and the Saints have been outscored 105-24. Presentation is batting .198 this season while opponents are batting .307 against them. The Saint pitching staff has a team earned run average of 6.40.
Drew Sanders leads the team with 19 hits and has a ,380 batting average with six doubles and eight runs batted in and five stolen bases. Chad Ellingson and Dylan Segula each have ten hits and Segula has five runs scored. Ellingson has pitched in four games and has 21 2/3 innings of work with a 4.57 earned run average and he has 11 strikeouts. Brett Temme has 13 strikeouts in 14 innings of work and is 0-2 in four appearances.
Dakota State is 2-5 this season and has wins over Central Christian (Kansas). The Trojans have a team batting average of .287 and have been outscored 35-30 through seven games.
Andy Lee and Joe Davis each have nine hits this year. Andy Lee has a .500 batting average with a double and two runs batted in. Danny Flahie has four runs batted in with two doubles. The Trojans haven’t run much with just two stolen bases in five attempts.
Zac Smith has a 1-0 record on the mound in two appearances with a team high 11 innings pitched with a 0.00 earned run average and three strikeouts. Austin Weber is 1-0 with a 1.80 earned run average and shares team honors with Jordan Sovich in strikeouts with six.
Jamestown was 1-2 heading into its games in Tucson beginning last weekend. The Jimmies are batting .181 this season and opponents are batting .298. The Jimmie pitching staff has a 4.70 earned run average.
With just three games as a sample, the numbers for Jamestown are quite limited. The Jimmies have just 15 hits in those three games and have been outscored 28-15. Noloan Skowronek has three hits and two runs scored. Mitch Stevens has a homerun. Nick Smart has the lone win on the mound after pitching two scoreless innings. Tanner Dahl and Kyle McKay both have six innings pitched and McKay went six innings in his appearance and wasn’t involved in the decision with 1.50 earned run average. McKay had ten strikeouts in the six inning outing.
Valley City State is 4-4 this season. All four wins are over Presentation and all four losses are to Mayville State. The Vikings have been outscored 47-36 and outhit 85-63. Valley City State has a .235 batting average and a 4.37 team earned run average.
Anthony Necochea has a .400 batting average and a team high 12 hits with two doubles and a triple with seven runs batted in. Tom Houdek has ten hits and six runs batted in and Austin Marker has a team high three stolen bases. Chip Rosales is 2-0 for the Vikings and has a 2.77 earned run average in 13 innings pitched. Bryce Venaas is1-1 with a 2.35 earned run average with 22 strikeouts in 17 innings of work.
Both Concordia-St. Paul and Central are playing their season openers in Arizona this week.
DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 4-0 this season with wins over Manhattan Christian on February 21 and 22. The Defenders won the four games by a combined score of 49-13. Dordt has a team batting average of .342 and outhit Manhattan Christian 41-21. The Defender pitching staff had a team earned run average of 3.21 and held Manhattan Christian to a team batting average of .200 for the four games.
Cameron Gingerich has a team high seven hits with a batting average of .412. Gingerich has five stolen bases this season with two doubles and four runs batted in. Nathan Fraley has four hits and six stolen bases and Connor Leppink, Andy Kollbaum and Jason Wapnick all have five hits.
Aaron Parks, Josh Van Kekerix, Nathan Forseth and Ben Van Kekerix all have recorded wins for the Defenders and Parks hurled a shutout with 13 strikeouts against Manhattan Christian while surrendering one hit.
