Vander Woude Claims National Title

Briana Vander Woude (Senior; Clara City, Minnesota) won the second national title of her career with a win Friday, May 24 in the heptathlon at the 2013 NAIA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Marion, Indiana. The meet is hosted by Indiana Wesleyan.
Vander Woude entered the day with a 273 point cushion after four events and maintained that lead by totaling 5,098 points in the seven event program. Her nearest competitor totaled 4,829 points.
Vander Woude started Friday with a jump of 17-8 in the long jump. She followed that with a throw of 118-2 in the javelin and held a 206 point lead heading into the 800 meter run, the final event of the program. Vander Woude ran the two-lap race in 2:35.80 for 622 points while her nearest competitor in the standings mustered a 2:41.20 for 559 points.
On Thursday Vander Woude established the top score after four events. She had times of :14.57 in the 100 meter hurdles and :25.70 in the 200 meters. She cleared 5-7 in the high jump and heaved the shot put 38-5.
Vander Woude was the National Champion Runner-Up in the 2012 Outdoor Heptathlon with 5,096 points and also claimed the National Champion Runner-Up in the 2012 Indoor Pentathlon. Earlier this year Vander Woude was the National Champion in the 2013 Indoor Pentathlon.
Vander Woude recently graduated Dordt College and is a two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete and was named a 2012 Capital One/Co-SIDA Academic All-American.
