Wolterstorff Earns GPAC Honor

February 19, 2013

(Tuesday, February 19; Sioux Center, Iowa) Trevor Wolterstorff, a senior at Dordt College,  has been named the 2013 Great Plains Athletic Conference's Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character award nominee to the NAIA.

The NAIA Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character Award is one of the most prestigious awards in the NAIA and was created as part of the NAIA's association with Citizenship Through Sports Alliance (CTSA), a group including ten other organizations from the world of sports that seek to promote and recognize sportsmanship.

This award was created to honor Dr. LeRoy Walker, a former president of the NAIA and President Emeritus of the United States Olympic Committee.  Dr. Walker is President Emeritus of the United States Olympic Committee and served as president through the 1996 Summer Games.  It recognizes a current student-athlete who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, campus and community leadership embracing the five core character values of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative, athletic achievement and future ambition.

Head Coach Ross Douma could not be more proud nor more impressed with Trevor. "Trevor has not only helped our team flourish, but more importantly, he has helped his teammates and peers on campus grow in ways far beyond the basketball floor." Coach Douma was impressed when Trevor made the decision to attend Dordt College. "It speaks volumes about his priorities and values."

Wolterstorff, a senior men's basketball player and track runner from Sioux Center, Iowa, has been named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete during his career along with garnering multiple all-GPAC and NAIA All-American honors during his four years at Dordt.  He was named a first-team Capital One Academic All-America College Division honoree earlier this week.

Wolterstorff will be receiving his degree with a major in psychology in May and plans to pursue graduate school with a focus on Neuropsychology.  He's the son of Kevin and Bonnie Wolterstorff from Sioux Center, Iowa.
