Women's Basketball Hosts Martin Luther

GAMETIME...Dordt College will host Martin Luther in women’s basketball on Monday, December 10 at 6:00.   The game will be broadcast on KDCR 88.5 FM and at kdcr.dordt.edu.  Results will be available at https://twitter.com/dcathletics  and at www.dordt.edu/athletics when complete.

SCOUTING REPORT… Martin Luther is 1-7 this season and lost four games in a row to start the season and have lost three in a row since a 71-59 win over Dakota State on December 1.  The Knights were 20-8 last season and won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and advanced to the NCAA Division III national tournament.  Martin Luther features one senior on its roster.

Martin Luther is averaging 56.5 points per game and allow 72.2 points per game while getting outrebounded 43.5-40.1.  The Knights convert 33.7 percent of the field goals they attempt while opponents are making 42.8 percent.  Martin Luther has been hampered by turnover issues with 176 turnovers through eight games and has forced 149 turnovers.

Hannah Hackbarth leads the team with 14.1 points per game and she is the leading three-point threat with a 19-46 season so far for 41.3 percent success.  She also averages 4.1 rebounds per game with 12 assists.  Brittney Gossen is averaging 10.4 points per game while making 41.5 percent of her field goals.  Alex Anthon and Hannah Rothe have scoring averges of 8.3 and 7.4 points per game.  Both are averaging 5.8 and 5.6 rebounds per game and Anthon shares team honors in assist with Gossen with 19 for the season.  Rebecca Engelbrecht tops the team with 6.9 rebounds per outing.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt College is 6-7 this season and 3-3 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  Dordt is outscoring teams 67.9-57.7 and make 39.4 percent of the field goals attempted and opponents are converting 35.8 percent.  The Defenders outrebound teams 39.7-37.7 and they are limiting teams to 25.5 percent three-point shooting.  The Defenders have committed 242 turnovers to 281 for opponents.

Kara Van Dyke is scoring 13.6 points per game while Kayla Broekhuis and Brianna Spronk score 11.6 and 11.1 points per game respectively.  Van Dyke is the leading rebounder with a 7.8 average and Spronk is taking down 5.6.  Elise Maresh converts 8.7 points per game and gets to 6.2 rebounds per contest.  Spronk leads the team in assists and steals with 30 and 25 respectively in 13 games played.

NEXT… Martin Luther will travel to Waverly, Iowa to face Wartburg on Saturday, December 15.  Dordt College will travel to Morningside on Wednesday, December 12 and will host Briar Cliff on Saturday, December 15 to close the first semester of action. 

LAST TIME… Dordt beat Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday by a final of 67-34 after leading 34-12 at halftime.  Dordt held Wesleyan scoreless over the final 8:30 of the first half and limited the hosts to 16.1 percent shooting in the first half of the game.  For the contest Dordt held Wesleyan to 11-62 from the floor and 17.7 percent overall.  Dordt was 25-58 from the floor for 43.1 percent and forced 22 turnovers while giving up 15 turnovers.  Dordt was outrebounded 48-44.  Kayla Broekhuis had 17 points and Elise Maresh had 12 with six rebounds.  Mycah Hulst and Kara Van Dyke each had eight rebounds. 

Martin Luther lost a 102-57 decision to Northwestern (Iowa) on Saturday in New Ulm, Minnesota.  The Knights were down 50-15 at halftime.  Martin Luther made 19-62 shots from the floor and was 5-16 on three-point shots.  Northwestern outrebounded Martin Luther 41-37 and the Knights were forced into 23 turnovers.  Hackbarth had 23 points and six rebounds and Gossen had 12.

RANKINGS...The NAIA Division II women’s poll includes Concordia no. 1; Morningside no. 3; Briar Cliff no. 5; Northwestern no. 8 while Dakota Wesleyan and Hastings are receiving votes.

The men’s poll features Dordt no. 7; Northwestern no. 9; Doane no. 14; Briar Cliff no. 25 with Hastings receiving votes.  Cardinal Stritch (Wisconsin) is no. 1 in this week’s poll.

SERIES…Dordt leads the series 12-0 with the last meeting coming on December 6, 2005.  Dordt was up 36-20 at halftime with Kara Karlsgodt scoring 13 and Shawna Flikkema 11.  Emma Babinec scored 12 in the loss as Dordt shot 50 percent from the floor and Dordt won the rebounding battle 45-31.
