December 4, 2012

(Tuesday, December 4; Sioux Center, Iowa)  Kayla Gesink (Sophomore; Sioux Center, Iowa) has added Tachikara NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and AVCA Honorable Mention All-Amercan to her list of post-season awards for the 2012 season.

Gesink claimed the honors after helping the Defenders to  a 22-12 overall mark and an 11-5 record in the Great Plains Athletic Conference this season while also claiming first-team all-GPAC honors and first-team AVCA NAIA All-West Central Region.

“The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) oversees all volleyball entities throughout the country from NAIA to NCAA Div 1, 2 & 3 as well as high school and junior level club.  It is great to have Kayla recognized by the AVCA in addition to her other honors this season," said Hanson.  "She deserves it and represents Dordt College very well.”

Gesink put up 9.26 assists this season with a 2.5 digs per set average.  She recorded a team high 35 service aces and had 105 kills in 121 sets this season.  Gesink also accounted for 16 solo blocks and 62 assisted blocks.

“It is wonderful, once again, to have Kayla surface with this national level of recognition.  She is such a talented setter and team leader,” said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson of her NAIA notice.  “She will continue to develop her God-given abilities to prepare our team for further success in the immediate future.”
