GPAC Volleyball Tournament Opens Tuesday

WHERE AND WHEN… Dordt College will host Briar Cliff in the Great Plains Athletic Conference post-season tournament and quarterfinal play on Tuesday, November 6 at 8:00.  The match will be available on KDCR FM and on the web at  There will also be a live webstream available of the contest at  Results and stats will be posted to and and also at .

THE RIVAL… The Briar Cliff Chargers are 7-9 in the GPAC and finished the regular season with a 19-14 overall mark.  The Chargers have won seven in a row since October 19.  The winning streak started after the Chargers had lost five out of six matches spanning October 5-17.

Jill Muhe’s team averages 12.54 kills per set and they get to 15.9 digs per outing.  The Chargers also average 1.58 blocks per set and 1.24 aces.

Kally Iedema is the team leader in kills with 2.88 per outing and she has a .140 kill efficiency.  Marissa Van Driel is averaging 2.32 kills and Monica Boeding accounts for 2.07 kills per outing.  Erin Frank is the setter and has an 8.65 assist average and she a team high 38 ace serves.  Lindsey Jardine is the top digger with a 3.73 average and she has 26 ace serves.  Iedema and Amy Frank average 2.80 and 2.54 digs per set.

THE DEFENDERS… Dordt College is 22-11 this season and finished the GPAC schedule with an 11-5 mark and the number three seed in the post-season tournament.  Dordt was tied with Midland for third and earned the third seed by virtue of a five set win over the Warriors in early October.  The Defenders are looking to regain the form they had prior to last week when they stood 11-2 in the conference.  Three straight losses to Morningside, Northwestern and Nebraska Wesleyan dropped the Defenders out of their perch in second place and into their current spot in third.

The Defenders average 12.16 kills per set with a .211 kill efficiency and they get to 14.06 digs per set.  The Defenders also average 1.34 ace serves and 2.56 blocks per outing.

Danae Geels is good for 2.55 kills per set and a .261 kill efficiency.  Katelyn Schuller is knocking down 2.48 kills with a .202 kill efficiency and Lindsey Floen is averaging 2.39 kills with a .289 kill efficiency and she leads the team with 1.16 blocks per outing.  Kayla Gesink is averaging 9.25 assists and she has a team high 35 aces.  The Defenders are topped in digging by Kayla Broekhuis with a 4.26 average and she has 28 service aces.

LAST ACTION… The Dordt volleyball team lost to Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday by a 25-23, 14-25, 28-26, 25-21 margin.  Dordt had 54 kills and 72 digs in the loss.  Katelyn Schuller  had 14 kills to lead Dordt and Lindsey Floen added 13 with Danae Geels getting 12.  Gesink put up 34 assists and Bekah Posthuma had 14.  Broekhuis got to a team high 21 digs and Gesink had 14.

Briar Cliff beat Morningside 3-1 on Saturday by set scores of 25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 26-24.  The Chargers had 58 kills and 71 digs.  Monica Boeding had 21 kills and Van Driel 15.  Frank put up 42 assists and Boeding had a team high 16 digs and Jardine got to 15 digs.

HISTORY… Dordt is 33-4 against Briar Cliff since 1998 with all four wins for the Chargers coming in Sioux City.  Dordt won sets two, three and four after dropping set one of the October 9 meeting in Sioux Center 25-21.  Dordt’s three wins were by 25-22, 25-22, 25-23.  Boeding and Iedema each had 11 kills and Van Driel put down 10.  Dordt was led by Geels with 12 kills and Floen had 11.  Meghan Krausman and Schuller each had 10 kills from the outside hitter spot.  Gesink lofted 44 assists and Broekhuis ahd 26 digs.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE…The winner will face the winner of the Doane-Morningside match on Thursday, November 8.  If Doane wins they will host the semifinal round match. If Morningside wins they will travel for the semifinal.  The GPAC Championship is scheduled for Saturday, November 10 with the winner getting an automatic earning a trip to the NAIA National  Tournament.  The other quarterfinal round matches feature Hastings against Concordia and Northwestern taking on Midland.
