Pre-Dordt …was a goalkeeper for Unity Christian (Michigan) where he earned all-conference, all-district, all-region and all-state honors as a senior in 2007. team was undefeated in 2007 and won a Michigan state championship. Unity was a conference, district and regional champion in 2006 and made it to the state semifinals.

Earned Division II third-team all-state honors in the process while playing sweeper. Unity allowed 0.58 goals per game in 2007 and Stepanek also served as a team captain while taking all-conference, all-district and all-region honors. In 2006 Unity was the district and regional champion and advanced to the Division II state semifinals with Stepanek playing a right defender position. Stepanek has played extensively for the Georgetown Rangers Club Soccer team since 1999.
