WHERE ARE THEY NOW
Where Are They Now is a podcast series featuring Dordt’s alumni student-athletes. On this episode, Christian Zylstra interviews Jen (Kempers) Van Otterloo. Van Otterloo was a multi-sport athlete at Dordt, a GPAC women’s cross country runner of the year, and a NAIA National Champion in the steeplechase event. Today, she works at Kinsey Elementary in Sioux Center teaching Physical Education. Below are some of Van Otterloo’s quotes from the interview.
On why she chose Dordt
“I knew [Dordt] had a good education program. They were really strong in volleyball and other athletics. I, at the time, signed up to play volleyball first and track. That's kind of what drew me there, the strong sports programs, and I knew that their education program was top-notch as well.”
On choosing her major
“I wanted to do something with fitness and teaching others… I didn't know where I was going to go. I was the manager of the rec center, and always thought I could see myself running a fitness facility if that was where my path led me. I kinda just kept all doors open and worked hard in all my classes so that when it came time to graduation, hopefully I would have a decision made or job opportunity. I always knew I wanted to do something active.”
