WHERE ARE THEY NOW
Where Are They Now is a podcast series featuring Dordt’s alumni student-athletes. On this episode, Christian Zylstra interviews 2014 Dordt College graduate Katie Bonnema. She’s one of the most decorated individual athletes in Defender athletics history and won a national championship her junior year in the indoor 600-meter event. Now, she teaches first and second grade at a Christian school in Inwood. Below are some of Bonnema’s quotes from the interview.
On why she chose Dordt
“My sister went to Dordt, so I knew a little bit from that, and from just being close by. It was a Christian college, and I wanted to go somewhere I could grow in my faith and be surrounded by other Christians and have a Christian perspective in my classes. I also heard about the track and cross country program, and those drew me to Dordt.”
On choosing her major
“I love kids, I love working with kids and making a positive difference in their lives. It's a hard-working job, but it's also very rewarding. Every day is different. I teach at a Christian school, so I get to share my faith journey with my students and we can sing and pray and talk about God and have learning different things together.”
On what sticks out to her about Dordt
“The friendships that I made. I developed really good friendships in cross country just because you're such a tight-knit family running a lot of miles together, getting to know each other on deeper levels--even meeting new people in my classes and hanging out with friends and having fun while also learning."
