cool things I did at Dordt

At Dordt I was able to participate in cross country and track, which was a huge part of my positive experience at Dordt. Being a part of a sports team on Dordt's campus truly is something special. From the close bonds you make with teammates, the long bus rides, devotional groups and constant encouragement from coaches; I would not trade the many many miles, early mornings, some tears and injuries; for anything. Being involved in track and cross at Dordt was one of the best decisions I've made.

Who I was when I came to dordt

I arrived at Dordt with fear that I would leave Dordt not knowing exactly what I wanted to do. Turns out, I still don't know exactly what that is but have narrowed it down substantially. I have also learned that it is okay to not known our calling right away. Dordt helped me find my strengths and weaknesses within business, which has helped place me in the career that is right for me. Business is such a broad field which can be challenging figuring out where you fit in there--but is also great because the vast amount of opportunity and options are there as well. I ended up going the Human Resources route and it amazes me how many avenues you can go with that specific area of businesses. Dordt has equipped me with the skills I need to be confident in my knowledge of HR and have confidence in who I am as a person.

how dordt impacted me

Dordt has absolutely shaped me into the person I am today. You will hear the word community over and over again at Dordt. I don't think this is over-used because the significance of being in a place, surrounded by such loving and encouraging people-- was vital for me. Having such a strong sense of community is one of the best things about Dordt. The amount of resources I had available to me to be able to grow as a person, including in my faith, was also significant. I knew that weather it be student services, professors, coaches or friends on campus--I had to resources available to me to achieve.

where i am now

I am currently working at Interstates in Sioux Center. I am working in an administrative role in the Human Resources Department. I love Human Resources and the many different avenues there are within this field. Interstates is a great company to work for, with a vast amount of opportunity for it's employees.

what i would tell prospective students

Get involved in a variety of things. If I could do one thing over at Dordt, it would have been to get involved in a variety of things. I was highly involved in sports but Dordt has so many other opportunities. They offer many opportunities to serve at all different times of the year. Weather that means over your spring break or over Christmas break. They also have semesters abroad which I have heard nothing but positive things about. Dordt also offers clubs such as Student Symposium and clubs specific to certain majors--such as the business club. I would encourage students to get out of your comfort zone and try new things.
