A Concept That Blew My Mind

In Botany, I learned that acacia trees can pass on "alarm signals" into the air to warn and protect other nearby trees from potential danger; namely browsing herbivores. By releasing ethylene into the air, acacia trees signal other trees to increase the production of tannins in their leaves. High amounts of consumed tannins can set off a lethal metabolic chain reaction in whatever creature happens to eat them. WOW!

Cool Things I Did At Dordt

I played lacrosse all four years at Dordt and found it was a great way to meet new people, whether they be upperclassmen or underclassmen. Lacrosse was also a great way to stay in shape without the time commitments that a varsity sport might have. I also went to Cincinnati and Atlanta with PLIA during my sophomore and junior years.

Obstacles I've Overcome

Dordt has given me the courage to try and experience new things. It has given me a greater desire to step out of my comfort zone in order to pursue Christ wherever he leads me.

Who I Was When I Came To Dordt

When I first arrived at Dordt, I wasn't sure if my belief in Christ was genuine. I had been surrounded by Christians my entire life and had never really been challenged in my faith. I knew what my passions were but didn't know what they looked like as a vocation.

How Dordt Impacted Me

Through Dordt I've realized that I am a disciple of Christ, and the Great Commission calls us to go and make more disciples. I've realized that Christian life is to be shaped by the purposes of God rather than a purpose that fits our own convenience. My experience here has helped me to become mature in my faith, and I feel prepared to take what I've learned back into the world through teaching and daily interactions with others.

where i am now

I am a middle school teaching position at West Sioux high school in Hawarden IA, where I teach 7th and 8th grade social studies.  (Updated 2/25/19)

What I Would Tell Prospective Students

Get involved! There are so many awesome opportunities both on and off campus that might pique your interests!

How Dordt Helped Me Do More

Dordt has helped me realize some of my gifts are both spiritually and vocationally. I can take the skills I've developed in my classes here and apply them directly to my own classroom. I've learned that I can teach Christianly in a public school setting, and that I can reflect the love of Christ not only in the words I say, but also through my actions.
