Fundamentals of Social Work Practice
COOL THINGS I DID AT DORDT
I played football and was a part of the Social Work Club. I also volunteered at KidZone and the Special Olympics Track and Field meet from freshman to senior year. My senior year, I interned at the Boys and Girls Home in Sioux City.
OBSTACLES I'VE OVERCOME
I have overcome a lot of health obstacles while in college and while playing football for Dordt. For example, I have battled DVT (Blood Clotting Disorder), and I broke my arm towards the end of my junior season.
WHO I WAS WHEN I CAME TO DORDT
When I first arrived at Dordt, I struggled with adjusting to a different culture than my hometown. At first, I just cared about playing football, but some professors and a former faculty member (Mrs. Pam DeJong) encouraged me work harder at my academics.
HOW DORDT IMPACTED ME
Dordt College helped me understand different cultures better. I grew up in a more urban, diverse setting, but Dordt helped me understand that there are people who are from smaller areas whose cultures are completely different than mine. And before I came to Dordt, I had never attended a Christian or private school. Dordt helped me understand what a good private Christian school is like.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR ME
I will be working on a master’s degree in social work, while working full time as a residential treatment therapist at the Boys and Girls Home and Family Services.
WHAT I WOULD TELL PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
It is important to get to know people in both the Dordt community and the Sioux Center community. Getting to know different, quality people in the area and at the college has helped me to grow while at Dordt.
HOW DORDT HELPED ME DO MORE
My experience at Dordt has helped me think outside the box. I was exposed to so many different cultures and experiences, and I’ve grow into a better professional because of everyone who has supported me.
