A CONCEPT THAT BLEW MY MIND

The entire theory of virtue ethics gave me an whole new perspective on moral principles and how to react to ethical dilemmas. I've always been very concerned with ethics, but taking a class on it gave me a new look into how to think about what I believe is the right thing to do.

COOL THINGS I DID AT DORDT

I attended and presented at the national Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in D.C. twice. I performed in the improvisation class, and I had the opportunity to travel to other schools to perform. I film attended screenings and awards ceremonies. I represented the international community as a member and president of the Students Without Borders Club, and the humanities departments on Student Symposium. I also traveled on a short-term mission trip to Kentucky, where we helped out in a local community.

OBSTACLES I'VE OVERCOME

I've learned to just try things, no matter my inhibitions or fears. I got to sing in choir and take voice lessons, even though that wasn't something I did in high school. Arriving here, sound design was not on my radar, but the opportunity presented itself for one of the theater productions. Since then, it's allowed me to go to a national theater festival twice, and gotten me an internship at a prestigious theater festival this summer.

WHO I WAS WHEN I CAME TO DORDT

My first day at Dordt was also my first day out of Africa. Everything was very new and exciting, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. More than anything, I wanted to tell stories, whether onstage, at a computer, or from behind a camera. I had a lot of ideas of what I wanted to do, but not much vision into what it would mean to achieve those goals.

HOW DORDT IMPACTED ME

I'm much more confident as a creator and more mature as an individual. Alongside my primary studies, I've had to wrestle through a lot of theological and philosophical ideas that were very new to me. Dordt's faculty has been instrumental in helping me figure out what I believe and why, and it's given me a much more solid foundation in my identity.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR ME

I've been offered an internship at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Massachusetts, where I'll be working alongside Broadway directors and Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actors.

WHAT I WOULD TELL PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

Don't overexert yourself, but try to take every opportunity. There's so much to do at Dordt, so many experiences and ways to grow. It's easy to do the bare minimum, but there's so much more out there.

HOW DORDT HELPED ME DO MORE

A lot of people believe that studying things like film or theater in college are a waste of time. The truth is, Dordt has offered me more opportunities to create and collaborate than I could ever imagine. I've written and directed two short films, performed in seven theater productions, and designed sound and posters for two shows. I also got to write a full musical and watch it performed onstage in front of hundreds of people. Now I'm finishing up my first feature-length screenplay. Dordt has not only encouraged me to do these things, but it's taught me how, and given me all the necessary mentoring, tools, and motivation to get them done.
