Sponsored by Valley Veterinary Clinic in Rock Valley, this project was a proof of concept design of an automated system that will dispense onto a cow's back a dose of antibacterial spray that accounts for the animal's weight when it is held in a livestock chute equipped with a scale. The system uses digital signals produced by the scale head to drive mechanical functions of the applicator, while not inhibiting the veterinarian's normal routine. The design goal is to avoid either underdosing the animal or overdispensing and wasting the transdermal parasiticide, which can occur in the current practice using a hand held spray gun that is usually set for the average weight of the animals in the group being processed.
