Program Options

Dordt College offers an accredited* engineering program leading to a bachelor of science in engineering degree with concentrations in:

  • Civil engineering: Civil engineers plan buildings, bridges, and roads, and they design systems to clean the air and manage water resources.
  • Electrical engineering: Electrical engineers develop technologies to move energy and information, developing systems ranging from microprocessors to the electric power grid.
  • Mechanical engineering: Mechanical engineers design and control mechanical devices and thermal systems ranging from wheelchairs to solar collectors to refrigerators.
  • Chemical engineering: Chemical engineers develop equipment and processes to convert both natural and recycled resources into fuels and materials for everyday products.

In addition to engineering concentrations in these traditional core engineering disciplines, students have the option to pursue the following engineering concentrations and emphasis areas:

  • Biomedical engineering: Biomedical engineers design technologies ranging from artificial organs to implantable sensors in order to improve and assist the function of our bodies.
  • Construction-structural engineering: Structural engineers design buildings, bridges, and industrial structures of all types. Construction engineers work closely with architects, contractors, and other engineers to plan, schedule, manage, and control the construction of buildings and public infrastructure.
  • Computer engineering: Computer engineers work at the crossroads of the circuit board and the information superhighway, designing software and hardware for the networks and computers that find themselves in all areas of our contemporary life. 
  • Energy systems engineering: Energy systems engineers focus on the design and planning needed to bring energy and power to communities around the world. 
  • Environmental engineering: Environmental engineers design methods and develop systems to provide clean air, water, and soil to communities around the world. 
  • Mechatronics engineering: Mechatronics engineers develop automation, robotics, and control systems to improve the safety and productivity of equipment and production facilities by the integration of mechanical sensors and electronic control devices. 

In Class

Dordt College also offers a non-accredited** engineering science major. This program allows for more flexibility in course selection so you can pursue the interdisciplinary fields of construction management and architecture.

You can serve the public in any of these fields by working with consulting firms, government organizations, manufacturing industries, research laboratories, and more.
