 ## Program Overview

Dordt’s Master of Arts in Teaching program is designed for professionals seeking an initial teaching license in any area. Take the expertise you earned with your bachelor's degree and apply it to the classroom, as you learn immediately applicable skills and resources relevant to teaching your subject area.

The 36-credit program can be completed in as little as 16 months. You will take 4.5-9 credits per semester depending on your completion timeline. The program includes completing 9 credits of full-time teaching. All of our courses are 100% online. No travel or on-campus residency is required.

 ### Licensure

Dordt's Master of Arts in Education has been approved by the Iowa Department of Education. Licensure through the MAT program may be subject to additional coursework from an outside university to meet any missing content area requirements.

 

  

 ### Accreditation

The Dordt University Master of Arts in Teaching is approved by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Iowa Department of Education.

 ## Admission Requirements

### How to Apply

To apply for admission, students will need to:

1. Fill out the online [application](https://www.dordt.edu/admissions-and-aid/apply-now)
2. Send in all official transcripts (including undergraduate and graduate)
3. Submit information for at least one reference (administrator or supervisor) on the application
4. Provide a resume

Applicants for whom English is a second language must have an adequate command of English as demonstrated by their performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The institutional code is 6171 and the department code is 3101.

### Types of Admission

Students may be admitted under one of the following categories:

##### Regular Admission 

Regular Admission Regular admission is granted to all candidates who have met all the admission criteria:

1\. An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution in a STEM field, including a grade point average of at least 3.0.  
2\. Official transcripts sent to the Dean for Online, Graduate, and Partner Programs from your undergraduate institution as well as transcripts  
from any graduate level course that you would like to have considered for transfer into the program.  
3\. Resume.  
4\. A recommendation form completed by your administrator or supervisor.  
5\. Applicants for whom English is a second language must have an adequate command of English as demonstrated by their performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Institutional code is 6171 and the department code is 3101.

##### Conditional Admission

Conditional admission may be granted to applicants who do not currently meet all of the criteria for regular admission. Status of conditionally admitted students will be reviewed after nine hours of graduate course work have been completed. The grade point average in graduate course work of the student needs to be at least 3.0 before the conditional admission status can be changed to regular admission status.

 

### Transfer of Credit

Students can transfer a total of nine semester hours of graduate work with a minimum of a B grade. All nine semester hours can come from any ARCU\* institution. A maximum of six semester hours may come from non-ARCU colleges, but the last three hours must come from an ARCU institution. (For example: if a student enters the program with six semester hours in graduate education from a state university, an additional three hours may be taken through one of Calvin University's online courses.)

The ARCU institutions include: Calvin University, Covenant College, Dordt University, Geneva College, Institute for Christian Studies, Redeemer University College, the King’s University College, and Trinity Christian College.

*Note: Courses older than 10 years at the end of a student's Dordt studies will not be accepted for transfer credit.*

All of our courses are fully online. No travel or on-campus residency is required.

### Tuition &amp; Fees

Tuition and fees for 2026-2027 are as follows:

- MAT Courses: $405/credit
- Application: Free
- One-time Technology Fee: $100
- Total Cost: $14,680

### Financial Aid

In an effort to make graduate education at Dordt available to as many people as possible, program costs are kept as reasonable as possible. Financial aid in the form of federal loan programs is available. **Students who wish to apply online should go to www.fafsa.ed.gov.** For more information, contact Harlan Harmelink in the Financial Aid Office at (712) 722-6082.

##### Dordt University Donor-Funded Annual Scholarships 

Donor-funded scholarships vary in dollar amounts and in recipient selection criteria. Typically, the application process includes an application form and recommendation and a scholarship committee that selects the recipients.  
Students may contact the Office of Graduate Studies (grad@dordt.edu) with inquiries.

##### Partner Scholarship for Vocate Members

Members of [Vocate](https://vocate.ca/membership/) are eligible for a $100 scholarship per term that applies to any of Dordt's online degree programs. Through its mission to provide expert and professional employment services, Vocate supports employees and builds healthy workplaces in Christian schools in Ontario, Canada.
