Kayla Franken is from Sioux Center and farming is in her blood. She grew up helping on the family farm with her grandparents, parents, uncles, and cousins at City View Farms. Kayla was not always fond of school, but the Pro-Tech Farm Operations program drew her in because of the internship opportunities and because a two-year program meant that she would be entering the workforce sooner. The broadness of the classes also appeals to Kayla, “There is a little bit of everything to prepare you for the agricultural industry.”
Kayla’s favorite part of Pro-Tech is her internship. When asked why, she said, “I love having the chance to expand my knowledge along with expanding my contacts around the area.” It’s no surprise that Kayla enjoys her internship at Dykstra Dairy, located near Maurice, IA. With around 4,000 cows and heifers there are endless opportunities for her to learn. She has been working most with the cows; milking, treating the hospital cows, and helping with pregnancy checks. But Kayla says her favorite part so far is learning the computer program at the dairy that documents all of the information on all the animals.
Life after Pro-Tech for Kayla will hopefully involve a lot more cows. She would like to continue work at a local dairy for several years, soaking up as much knowledge as she can. Her ultimate goal is to work on the family farm alongside her grandparents, parents, uncles, and cousins.
