Program Options

Curriculum and Instruction Specialization options

  • The Teacher Leadership option is a ten-course, 30 semester hour specialization that prepares pre-K-12 teachers to assume the role of teacher/leader in the curricular decisions and the instructional practices in their schools. This specialization equips teachers to articulate a Christian perspective for education and prepares them to translate that perspective and lead others within their classroom, school, and community.
  • The Special Education option consists of 12 courses in a 30 semester hour specialization that provides an educator with a special education endorsement on the teaching license and prepares the teacher or administrator to be a competent professional and leader in special education roles. This specialization provides practical, hands-on learning experiences in teaching and leading in a distinctively Christian manner. Coursework focuses on specific strategies for assessing and addressing learning difficulties of various types. Courses and field hours provide experience in developing instructional strategies, behavior interventions, and inclusion opportunities for special needs learners. Additional focus is on working with professionals and parents to maximize learning opportunities for children.
  • The Developmental Reading option consists of 11 courses in a 30 semester hour specialization that provides an educator with a reading endorsement on the teaching license and prepares the teacher or administrator to be a competent professional and leader in reading development. This specialization provides practical, hands-on learning experiences in teaching and leading in a distinctively Christian manner. Coursework focuses on specific strategies for assessing and addressing literacy development and instruction in a school. Courses and field hours provide experience in developing instructional strategies for an elementary literacy program. Additional focus is on working with professionals and parents to maximize literacy development opportunities for children.
  • The Early Childhood Education option consists of 12 courses in a 30 semester hour specialization that provides an educator with an early childhood endorsement on the teaching license and prepares the teacher or administrator to be a competent professional and leader in early childhood educational programming. This specialization provides practical, hands-on learning experiences in teaching and leading in a distinctively Christian manner. Coursework focuses on specific strategies for assessing and addressing early childhood development and instruction in an educational environment. Courses and field hours provide experience in developing an effective early childhood program. Additional focus is on working with professionals and parents to maximize early educational development opportunities for very young children.
  • The Educational Technology option consists of 11 courses in a 30 semester hour specialization that prepares the teacher or administrator to be a competent educational leader in role involving educational technology. This specialization provides practical, hands-on learning experiences in teaching and leading in a distinctively Christian manner. Coursework focuses on specific strategies for helping to shape the technology culture of a school and promote staff professional development as well as effective teaching and learning in online and blended classrooms. Courses and a portfolio provide experience in implementing initiatives in technology integration, e-learning design, and emerging technologies.
  • The Instructional Coach option consists of 12 courses in a 30 semester hour specialization that prepares the teacher or administrator to be a competent educational leader in the role of instructional coach. This specialization provides practical, hands-on learning experiences in teaching and leading in a distinctively Christian manner. Coursework focuses on specific strategies for helping to shape the instructional culture of a school and promote staff professional development. Courses and an internship provide experience in implementing school-wide initiatives in curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, and faculty development. Additionally, an Instructional Coach Certificate is available for those who already have an earned master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. The certificate requires five or more courses beyond a typical master’s degree in curriculum and instruction.

Administration specialization Options

  • The School Leadership option is a ten-course, 36 semester hour, specialization that prepares an educator to be an educational leader, capable of undertaking the tasks and responsibilities of a principal or director of special education. This specialization leads to administrative licensing in the state of Iowa. Significant hours are spent in field experiences, allowing educators the opportunity to put into practice what they are learning in the classroom to teach in a distinctively Christian manner, this degree equips teachers to be able to articulate a Christian perspective for education and prepares them to translate that perspective and lead others into its practice within their classroom, school, and community.
  • The Sport Leadership option is a 10-course, 33 semester hour specialization that prepares teachers, coaches, and other education professionals for leadership in educational athletics. This specialization provides practical, hands-on learning experiences in teaching and leading in a distinctively Christian manner. Providing a graduate level focus on issues, research, and leadership in education, this specialization also focuses on the specific leadership principles and perspectives applicable to sport leadership. Six credits of practicum experience provide real-world learning and application.
