What computer specifications are recommended for bringing a computer on campus?

Most students bring their own computers to campus. We recommend the following specifications if you plan on doing so:
  • Dual Core CPU
  • 2 GB RAM
  • Windows Vista, XP Professional, or Mac OS X
  • Microsoft Office 2007 'Student and Teacher' or 'Professional' versions
  • Wireless network adapter (laptops)
  • Ethernet network card
Note: We supply McAfee Antivirus software to all students who connect to our dorm network.  You do not need to purchase antivirus software for your computer.

What is the student to computer ratio?

The student to computer ratio is 8 students per 1 lab computer.

What do you estimate is the percentage of students that bring their own computers?

85% of students bring a computer with them to campus. Last year 75% of these computers were laptops compared to 25% desktops.

Can I have a computer in my room, and if so how do I get connected to the network?

Yes, you may have a computer in your room; in fact, more than 85% of students did so last year. Wired network access is available from all on campus housing through our ResNet system. Simply verify that your computer has a network card installed (most do) and make sure to bring a network (ethernet) cable.

What type of wireless network coverage is available on campus?

Wireless network access is available in many of our on-campus facilities. Click here for our wireless coverage map.

Do students ever have to wait for a computer to become available?

Students have favorite labs and when "crunch time" rolls around they may have to wait for a computer in that particular lab. Usually, computers are available, but you might have to choose a different lab during those peak times.

Are there Internet lock-out programs on campus?

Yes, we use content filtering software that limits access to pornographic material. We do not allow access to instant messaging programs (MSN, AOL) from Dordt owned computers. We expect students to follow responsible use of technology guidelines found in the student handbook.

How much hard drive space is each student allotted on the network?

Each student is allocated 200 megabytes of network drive space.

Are there computers in the residence halls?

Yes, there are mini-labs in all the residence halls except East Campus apartments.

Do faculty assign paperless homework?

Yes, many professors assign and accept electronic homework assignments via our online course management system, Courses@Dordt. Many of the same professors grade and return assignments electronically as well.

Can email be accessed from off-campus?

Email can be accessed from off-campus via the Internet. Simply point your browser to http://groupwise.dordt.edu.

What software packages do you support?

We support Windows 2000 and XP, Microsoft Office 2007, Internet Explorer, GroupWise (email), Mac OS X, and Microsoft Office 2004 for Macintosh.

How does Dordt's printing program work?

Each student has a printing account with a balance of $7.00 at the beginning of each semester. Seven cents is debited from this account for each laser page printed, while twenty cents is subtracted for each color page. Students can deposit money in their printing accounts at any time during the school year by visiting computer services or the library.

Can I publish my own web page at Dordt?

Yes, students can publish web pages by saving them to the public_html directory in their personal accounts. These pages are immediately available on the Internet.

What type of connection to the Internet do you have?

We have a high speed ethernet connection to our ISP, who is in turn connected to the Internet backbone via a T3 circuit.
