A new tradition is established
By Wes Fopma, Director of Alumni Relations
Dordt’s first fall Alumni Weekend happened on September 26 and 27. The move from February to September came with the start of the varsity football program. The Alumni Council decided that, in addition to the draw of football, fall was a better season for gathering. And what a beautiful weekend it was. Alumni Weekend in February never had sunny skies and 75 degree temperatures!
Moving Alumni Weekend to the fall also allows for more outdoor activities, and we certainly took advantage of that. Alumni attended the football game, a kids’ carnival on the outdoor tennis courts, a tailgate party, and the lacrosse game.
Dale Zevenbergen from the business department led a presentation on “Continuous Improvement” principles for businesses, drawing nearly ninety alumni for breakfast on Friday morning. It was the largest Alumni Business Connections breakfast we’ve had.
The Kid's Carnival is a hit for children of alumni. Sack races, a football toss, and face painting were just a few of the activities.
The weekend ended on Saturday night with nearly 600 people attending the Dueling Pianos concert, which included lots of audience participation. What a show they put on! Rose Van Engen, former Alumni Council member and an alumna from 1977, stole the show with her rendition of “Those Were The Days.” Planning for next year’s Alumni Weekend is already underway.
The Alumni Council gathered over the weekend for a spirited meeting. Issues discussed included holding alumni events in various regions of North America over the course of the next year, a long-range planning discussion on things the Alumni Council would like to tackle in the next five years, and the reintroduction of Alumni Chapters to the Alumni Association. This year we will be starting Alumni Chapters in West Michigan and in Escondido, California. Each chapter will be led by a committee of four or five alumni to plan events for others in their area. This will allow alumni in those areas to better stay in touch with each other and with the college. If you are interested in participating in a chapter in one of these areas, contact Wes Fopma at email@example.com or call (712) 722-6028.
The Dordt Defender football game was a main event at the first-ever fall Alumni Weekend. Dordt lost to Nebraska Wesleyan, but it was a gorgeous fall day.
The Alumni Council also has a few openings. Currently, we need Alumni Council representatives from the Wilmar/Prinsburg area; Wisconsin; the Washington, D.C., or New Jersey area; and Ontario, Canada. If you might be interested in serving in one of these areas please contact Wes Fopma at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (712) 722-6028.
