Dordt College is adding to its summer camp offerings, and this time,
there's something new for high school students. DC SIMS, Dordt College's
Summer Investigations in Mathematics and Statistics, is being offered
as a free, first\_year pilot program for motivated and talented high
school students. The three\_day, three\_night camp will feature hands\_on
explorations for students who will be mentored by Dordt math and statistics
faculty.

\uc1舠?Work hard. Play hard. That\uc1舗?s our motto.\uc1舡?
says co\_director Valorie Zonnefeld. \uc1舠?Students passionate
about mathematics know that math can be fun. We\uc1舗?ll have
a great time doing a variety of interesting things with mathematics
and statistics, and we\uc1舗?ll take plenty of time to do fun
activities and get to know each other, too.\uc1舡?

Along with research and recreational activities, the program will
expose students to careers and research in mathematics and statistics.
Participants should have a strong interest and aptitude in math or
statistics and should have completed at least two years of high school
mathematics by the end of this school year.

\uc1舠?Many high school students who enjoy mathematics and statistics
don\uc1舗?t know what career options are available to them in
these areas. But, the reality is that our world is becoming more dependent
on data daily. This means that students with a passion for numbers
now have a wealth of career options available to them,\uc1舡?
says DC SIMS co\_director Nathan Tintle.

{\pard\sa220\li0\ri0\ql\plain
\uc1舠?DC SIMS will be an opportunity for interested students
to explore applications of mathematics and statistics to a number
of fields to help them in their process of vocational discernment
at this critical point in their lives,\uc1舡? Tintle said.

The camp is available to only 12\_15 qualified students who will be
juniors or seniors in fall of 2012. The program runs concurrent with
Dordt Discovery Days, the popular week\_long camp for children who
have completed 6th through 8th grade.

DC SIMS students will arrive Monday evening, June 25, for orientation
and then spend three days exploring topics in actuarial science, mathematical
modeling, statistics/biostatistics/statistical genetics, cryptography,
and infinity. Students are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as
possible, and no later than March 15, 2012. Those who are accepted
into the program will be notified in early to mid\_April.

DC SIMS is funded by the Andreas Center at Dordt College. High school
students who are interested will need to submit an application, which
can be found, along with more information, at www.dordt.edu/dcsims.\line
