Dordt Alumni Weekend Feb. 20-22
January 23, 2004
Dordt College friends and alumni are invited to the campus Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, for the annual Alumni Weekend.
“Firmly Planted … Bearing Fruit” is the theme of the weekend, with special events including a Michael Card concert on Friday night, a free country breakfast Saturday 8:30-10:30 in the dining hall (honoring the Ag Department’s 25th anniversary); and alumni hockey and basketball games.
Selected as this year’s distinguished alumna is Julie Stronks, a 1982 graduate and professor of political studies at Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington. She will speak to Dordt students at the Thursday chapel service, attend a reception for political science alumni Friday at 5 p.m. at the Humble Bean, and speak at the Alumni Banquet Friday evening at 6 p.m. in the Campus Center. Reservations for the alumni banquet may be made by calling Judy Hagey at 712-722-6028.
Award-winning musician and songwriter, Michael Card, will be performing at the B. J. Haan Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Friday evening. Tickets for the concert are available at area Christian bookstores and from the alumni office. Proceeds will benefit Marriage Matters of Northwest Iowa.
The new ice skating rink at the All Seasons Center will accommodate a round robin hockey tournament, beginning Friday at 5:45 p.m. and continuing Saturday with games at 9:15 a.m., 4:30 p.m. and concluding with a 7 p.m. match between the Blades and the winning alumni team. Admission to all four games in the tourney will be only $5, or spectators may attend individual games for $3 each. Following the last game (about 6 p.m.) a pizza buffet will be served in the upstairs meeting room, with pizza priced at $1 per slice and soft drink provided by the Alumni Association.
In basketball action, alumni will play the junior varsity team at De Witt Gymnasium on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Lady Defenders will host Briar Cliff University at 1 p.m., with men’s play following at 3 p.m.
Children are invited to a Country Carnival on Saturday afternoon from 1-4 p.m. at the Dordt College Rec Center. All the proceeds from this event will be used to fund PLIA (Putting Love Into Action) service projects.
Saturday evening events include an open swim at the All Seasons Center from 7:30-8:45, followed by an ice cream social at 9 p.m. in the campus center and Comedy League at 9:30 p.m.
