New coordinator will link Dordt College students with community

January 14, 2004

A new staff position at Dordt College has been created to help link area individuals, businesses and community resources with Dordt College students.

Taking on the new position of “community-based learning coordinator” is Corinne Huisman, who has been teaching at Dordt in various capacities for many years. Currently an assistant professor of foreign language, Huisman will split her time between her old position and the new one for the remainder of the academic year, then work full-time in the community-based coordinator position beginning in mid-May. As Dordt College’s link with businesses in Sioux Center and the surrounding community, Huisman will seek out local enterprises that might enjoy or benefit from a match with Dordt College students training for a particular vocation. Huisman will develop, coordinate and evaluate volunteer opportunities, service-learning possibilities and vocational development programs.

Other duties will include developing an alumni, local community, regional, national and international partners resource data bank for career exploration, internship, service-learning and volunteer programs. Huisman will also help develop guidelines for career shadowing, community-based projects, graduate school/seminary visits, and ministry outreach programs.

“We are very excited that Corinne has agreed to take on this new position, and believe that her familiarity with Dordt College, the faculty, staff and students, as well as her connections within the community, will assist her greatly as she works to develop this new position for the college,” said Sue Droog, director of human resources, in announcing the decision.

This full-time position is funded through a grant from the Lilly Endowment Program for the Theological Exploration of Vocation. The purpose of this program is to help Dordt College students discover their calling to serve God by ministering to a hurting world.
