Van Den Bosch Earns National Coaching Honor

Tom Van Den Bosch, head coach of the Dordt College Lady Defender volleyball team, has been named the 2003 Tachikara/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) NAIA national coach of the year.

Van Den Bosch recently led the Lady Defenders to their first ever Final Four finish at the NAIA national tournament and a 37-6 record. The 2003 Lady Defenders were the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season champions with a perfect 16-0 record and won the GPAC post season tournament championship.

Van Den Bosch was named the conference coach of the year in November, the fifth time he has been so honored having won the award in the South Dakota Iowa Conference in 1998 and 1999 and in the GPAC in 2000, 2001 and 2003. Van Den Bosch was also named the NAIA Region IV coach of the yar in 2003, nominating him for the national award in the process.

Before taking the reins of the Dordt College program in 1997 Van Den Bosch built the Western Christian High School volleyball program into one of the most respected high school programs in Iowa. His teams were 709-71 during his tenure and 16 of his teams made it to the Iowa High School State Tournament. Western won four state titles with Van Den Bosch as skipper along with with two runner up finishes and four finishes in the Final Four. His coaching record is a combined 947-124, an .884 winning percentage.

Van Den Bosch was presented with the national award Thursday, December 18 at the annual Tachikara/AVCA Coach of the Year Banquet in Dallas on Thursday, December 18 held in conjunction with the 2003 American Volleyball Coaches Association Annual Convention.
