Van Wyk, Van Geest art in Sioux City show

Two artists with Dordt College connections have their work included in a major exhibit now on display at the Sioux City Art Center. Eric Van Wyk and Susan Van Geest are both among the 47 artists whose pieces are included in Local Perspectives, 2003, featuring 65 artworks by individuals currently living within a 100-mile radius of Sioux City.

Eric Van Wyk, Dordt Class of ’02, is showing a wood sculpture entitled, “Breathe.” Van Wyk is the currently the co-manager of the Humble Bean, a coffee shop located on Dordt’s campus.

Susan Van Geest, associate professor of art at Dordt College, is showing a marble sculpture entitled “Altar I.” Altar I

The Local Perspectives Exhibit is on display through Jan. 11, 2004. This juried exhibition is free and open to the public Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday from noon to 9 p.m.; and Sunday from 1- 5 p.m. The Sioux City Art Center is located at 225 Nebraska Street, Sioux City

As a biennial, juried exhibition, Local Perspectives is designed to further the Art Center’s mission by supporting and exhibiting local and regional contemporary art. Traditionally, Local Perspectives has included some of the most progressive artwork in the area, constantly introducing viewers to new advancements in the visual arts and challenging traditional modes of thought and communication.

Three of the exhibiting artists will talk in-depth about their work on Saturdays at noon in the Art Center’s Stark Lecture Hall. Scheduled presenters and dates are as follows: Robert Therien (October 18); Dolie Thompson (November 8); and Mo Neal (December 6).
