Dordt Hosts Morningside In Non-League Baseball

GAMETIME… The Dordt Defenders will host Morningside Tuesday, April 22 starting at 4:00.  The contest will be a single, nine inning contest and can be heard the web at .

SCOUTING REPORT… Morningside is 20-21 this season with a 9-7 GPAC record.  The Mustangs will face Northwestern and Briar Cliff this Thursday and Saturday to conclude the GPAC season.  The Mustangs are also scheduled to face Graceland on Monday, April 21.

Nate Clark is batting .414 this season for the Mustangs and has 58 this with four homeruns and 32 runs batted in.  Jacob Lamoreux is batting .377 with 10 doubles and 40 runs scored and 57 hits.  Lamoreux also has 10 stolen bases and Blake Meacham is batting .313 with 35 hits and 18 runs batted in. 

Scott Greg is 3-1 on the mound with a 2.25 earned run average and has 10 strikeouts in 28 innings of work.  Nick Weeter is 2-3 with a 2.57 earned run average and John Sorenson is 3-0 with a 2.77 earned run average in 26 innings of work.  The Mustangs have a team earned run average of 3.95 and a team batting average of .299.

DEFENDER NOTES… This is the final non-conference test for the Defenders this season as they have two doubleheaders with Dakota Wesleyan and Northwestern remaining after this game.

Dordt has a team batting average of .271 and the Defenders have 178 runs scored.  Jake Thayer is batting a team high .358 this season with a team high 39 hits and he has knocked in 14 runs with 19 runs scored.  Andy Kollbaum is batting .333 with 36 hits, seven doubles and 16 runs batted in.  Dane Le Platt has a .300 batting average with 30 hits and has knocked in 16 runs.  Jason Wapnick is good for 25 runs batted in this season and has 25 hits and five doubles.

Ben Van Kekerix is 3-1 on the mound with 46 innings pitched and has a 5.28 earned run average.  Lucas Carls is 2-2 with a 4.58 earned run average and has 21 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings.  Cole Samuelson also has a 2-1 record in seven appearances—six of them in relief. 

Nathan Fraley moved to 11th all-time in hits at Dordt College with 111 and trails Stacey Kooiman in 10th with 113.  The Florida native also stands fifth all-time in runs scored with 87 and trails Doug Miedema and Steve VerMeer who are tied for third with 88.

Lucas Carls is seventh in career strikeouts with 131 and fifth in innings pitched with 174 1/3.  

THE SERIES… Morningside leads the series 29-4 after a doubleheader sweep last week.

Dordt College lost a 6-2 decision at Morningside on Thursday afternoon in Sioux City, Iowa. The Defenders led briefly when they scored a run in the top of the first but the hosts scored six in a row before Dordt got a run in the top of the last frame.

Dordt’s first inning run came with Jake Thayer singling to lead off the inning. A sacrifice by Cameron Gignerich moved the runner up and a Andy Kollbaum single put runners at the corners. A wild pitch got Thayer in with the inning coming to a close with Alex Schoonhoven stranded at third base. Schoonhoven was running for Kollbaum.

Morningside got two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first to take their first lead of the game. Dordt stranded a pair of runners in the second and Morningside pushed the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second.

Morningside then added three runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and an error for a 6-1 lead.

After being stifled most of the game the Defenders scored a run in the seventh when Bryan Wallman singled and Anthony Maule doubled. Thayer grounded out to the right side of the infield and Wallman scored before the side was retired.

Dordt was outhit 8-7 and stranded six runners to seven for Morningside. Ben Van Kekerix went the distance and allowed six runs on eight hits with four earned runs and he walked six.

Nathan Forseth was 2-2 at the plate with Thayer, Kollbaum, LePlatt, Wallman and Maule all recording one hit each.
Three late runs by the Morningside Mustangs gave the hosts a sweep of the Dordt College. Morningside got the 6-3 win while outhitting the Defenders 15-9.

Dordt got a run in the top of the second inning with Rick Schmidt getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. A double play ended the inning before Dordt could do any more damage. Morningside answered with a run three hits and they also stranded two runners in the inning.

Morningside took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning on four hits and stranded two in the inning. Dordt got the two runs back in the top of the fifth inning. Andy Kollbaum singled in a run and Jake Thayer scored on an error.

A scoreless sixth inning followed with Morningside scoring one in the bottom of the seventh inning and two more in the eighth.

Dordt threatened in the ninth as the Defenders loaded the bases on a Nathan Forseth double and Rick Schmidt was hit by a pitch. Thayer singled with one out to load the bases but a pair of fly outs followed to end the game.

Josh Van Kekerix started the game and went seven innings and was charged with four runs with a walk and a strikeout and was charged with the loss. John Drenten relieved and allowed two runs on a hit and Josh Peterson allowed a hit before recording the final two outs of the eighth inning.

Jake Thayer had three hits in the lead off spot while Gingerich, Kollbaum, Nathan Fraley, Jon Holwerda, Nathan Forseth and Schmidt had a hit.

LAST TIME… Morningside split with Dakota Wesleyan on April 19, winning game one 9-8 and losing game two 4-0.
Dordt split with Mount Marty on Saturday, losing the opener 13-0 but winning the second game 6-2.  Dordt got a complete game pitching victory by Lucas Carls in the contest and Jake Thayer had four hits.

NEXT UP… Dordt will travel to Dakota Wesleyan on Thursday night while Morningside goes to Orange City to face Northwestern.
