Dordt Softball Hosts Northwestern

GAMETIME… Dordt will host Northwestern in Great Plains Athletic Conference softball on Tuesday, April 8 starting at 5:00. The games can be heard on a webcast at www.dordt.edu/athletics.

SCOUTING REPORT… Northwestern is 18-14 overall and 5-4 in the GPAC. The Raiders won five games in a row from March 22-29 and managed to win three of them by one run and another by two in the string. Northwestern then lost three in a row to Concordia, Morningside and Hastings before salvaging game two of the doubleheader with Hastings on Saturday to break that losing streak.
Clare Ipema is batting .418 with a team high 41 hits and she has scored 22 runs. Laura Hurley is batting .357 with 35 hits, 12 doubles, four homeruns and a team high 31 runs batted in. Alex Price and Jillian Kleinhesselink each have 32 hits and Price has knocked in 24 runs.
Katie Vande Voort is 7-3 on the mound with a 1.85 earned run average and she has struck out 50 batters in 75 innings of work. Kelly Bracelin has thrown a team high 90 innings and is 6-6 with a 1.87 earned run average and she has struck out 63 batters.
Northwestern has scored 139 runs in 32 games and has a team batting average of .284 and a staff earned run average of 2.26.
DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 6-20 this season and 2-6 in GPAC play. Dordt has scored 99 runs and is batting .278 as a team. Six of Dordt’s losses have been my two runs or less.
Ashton Beaird is batting .367 with 29 hits, seven doubles, six homeruns and 18 runs batted in. Erica White is batting .357 and has a team high 30 hits with 12 doubles, six homeruns and she has knocked in 27 runs. Michal Hoogland and Sidney Larsen are batting .308 and .304 respectively and Kassidy Van Voorst has 24 hits and 14 stolen bases.
Sidney Larsen has pitched 73 innings and has 37 strikeouts with a 4-10 mark so far this season. Samantha Dunn has a 2-2 record in 31 innings of work and has pitched in nine games and has 19 strikeouts. Haley Fligge has pitched 51 games and has started nine games for the Defenders and hs 32 strikeouts.
LAST TIME…Northwestern split with Hastings on the road Saturday as they took a 3-0 contest in game two after losing a 1-0 contest to open the twinbill.
The Defender softball team lost an 11-3 decision in game one of the doubleheader with Doane on Saturday in Crete, Nebraska. Dordt bounced back to take a late lead in game two but ended up on the short end of a 9-8 decision as Doane won it on a two run homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning.
THE SERIES… Northwestern leads the series 54-23.
Dordt College lost an 11-2 decision to Northwestern on Monday night, April 8, 2013 in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Defenders got two runs in the first inning on a Brittany Kooiker two-run single.
Northwestern answered with one run each in the first, second and third innings and then got eight runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Dordt was retired in order in the fifth and the game ended by virtue of the eight run difference rule.
Dordt's Sidney Larsen took the loss while allowing just one earned run and struck out two and walked two. Dordt got singles from Kooiker and Haley Huisman and a double from Sidney Larsen.
Dordt College lost a 12-0 decision to Northwestern in game two of their doubleheader in Orange City, Iowa on Monday, April 8. The Defenders were unable to muster a hit in the loss while committing four errors that led to four unearned runs. Ashton Beaird was Dordt's only baserunner, reaching on a walk with two outs in the top of the fourth.
Brittany Kooiker had four strikeouts and five walks and took the loss.
Northwestern scored two runs each in the first two innings and the Raiders scored eight in the fourth. The game ended after the fifth due to the eight run difference rule.
Northwestern's Katie Vande Voort had five strikeouts and one walk while securing the no-hit shutout.
NEXT…The Defender softball team will travel to Midland on Saturday, April 12 for a pair of games in GPAC play.
Northwestern will play Morningside on Wednesday, April 10 in a single game that was re-scheduled from a doubleheader on April 2. Northwestern travels to Midland and Doane on Friday and Saturday of this week.
