New book released by Dordt authors

June 11, 2003

User-friendly best describes a new book, Write for Business: A Compact Guide to Writing and Communicating in the Workplace, just released by Sioux Center writers John Van Rys and Verne Meyer. Van Rys is an English professor at Dordt, while Meyer will be teaching an adjunct English course at Dordt this fall.

Its a nuts and bolts writing guide for business people, said Van Rys about the guide, published by UpWrite Press. It is designed for busy business professionals who want to positively portray themselves and their company with strong writing skills.

The business writing guide comes complete with a computer CD, providing users with model writing templates, interactive lessons and the ability to instantly find writing advice via a keyword search.

In designing the book, Van Rys said they provided guidelines, models, checklists and templates that save business people time. Color-coded checklist pages, a detailed topic index and easy-flip spiral binder all help users find the information they need quickly. Tips are given for writing memos, e-mail, letters, announcements, requests, complaints, acceptance/denial notices, reports, procedures, etc.

Write for Business is the first in a series of writing guides being produced, with the compact guide being followed by a more extensive deluxe edition in August and a college edition at a later date.

The book is available at the Dordt Bookstore (712-722-6420) and from the publisher, Upwrite Press (1-800-261-0637).
