Track Standards Met, Records Fall

(Monday, February 17; Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders had four individuals and two relays meet standards for the NAIA National Championship Meet at an meet hosted by Dordt on Saturday, February 15.
Katie Bonnema (Senior; Ireton, Iowa) qualified met the “A” or automatic standard with a time of :57.54 in the 400 meters, making it under the needed time of :58.9. Siera Wilgenburg (Freshman; Hills, Minnesota) had a time of :59.55 which was just shy of the automatic standard and met the “B” or provisional standard of :59.9.
Kelsey Lewis (Freshman; Lachine, Michigan) and Nick Vander Kooi (Freshman; Fremont, Michigan) both met the “B” standard in the 800 meters and 1,000 meters respectively. Lewis had a time of 2:20.28 which was short of the automatic qualification standard of 2:19 and was under the provisional time of 2:20.5. Vander Kooi’s time was 2:33.45 in the 1,000 meters and was under the provisional standard of 2:33.80 and was short of the automatic standard of 2:31.90.
Both distance medley teams set school records and met the “A” standard in their respective events. Kayla Byl (Sophomore; Sioux Center, Iowa), Siera Wilgenburg (Freshman; Hills, Minnesota), Katie Bonnema (Senior; Ireton, Iowa) and Abby De Vries (Junior; Sioux Center, Iowa) made up the quartet that ran a 12:17.57 which was well under the automatic standard of 12:36. Chris Postma (Senior; Orange City, Iowa), Josiah Eckels (Freshman; Britt, Iowa), Sam Wensink (Freshman; Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin) and Tim Bierma (Senior; Sioux Center, Iowa) ran the event in 10:21.60 which was better than the automatic standard of 10:33.5.
Three other Dordt College Indoor Track and Field records fell on Saturday. Erin Francis (Senior; Carrollton, Texas) ran the 55 hurdles in :07.57 which broke the record he already held of :07.69. Justin Pastoor’s 49-2.25 performance in the weight throw shattered the previous mark of 45-3.75. Three pole vaulters cleared 14-7.75 to break the previous mark of 14-7.25. Dordt’s new record holders are Brett Huff (Junior; Ramona, California), Jon Brinkerhoff (Junior; Branchville, New Jersey) and Rob Davidson (Junior; St. Charles, Missouri).
The women’s distance medley team established a new mark, bettering the previous best of 12:28.1 and the men shattered a record established in 1998 of 10:23.45.
The Defenders will travel to the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, February 22 in Crete, Nebraska. The NAIA National Championships are scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, March 6-8 in Geneva, Ohio.
